10 Reasons I Wish Handwritten Love Letters Were Still A Thing

I know it’s old-fashioned, but I really wish handwritten love letters would make a comeback. I can’t think of anything more sweet or thoughtful than a guy putting his feelings for me on paper and I’d love to receive one.

  1. They’re wildly romantic. Just running through the scenario of what I’d feel if I came home to a love letter gives me the warm and fuzzies. It would mean my lover would have to get stationary, put everything aside to write and address the letter, then send it to me to be received days later. The whole process is a totally charming idea and I know it’d just make my heart go crazy, no matter how corny it sounds.
  2. Getting any mail that isn’t junk is amazing. When I come home to get mail, it’s never anything exhilarating. Instead, it’s usually a pile of junk mail, bills, or tickets. There’s pretty much never anything I actually want to receive in there, so the idea of getting a handwritten love letter would totally rejuvenate the magic behind snail mail. It’d make the junk fall to the wayside because I’d be so captivated.
  3. Love letters are a lovely change-up from staring at a screen. I spend most of my time staring at computer and phone screens all day and night. Receiving a loving text is totally great, but it’d be a completely different feeling if I got a handwritten letter. Since I spend so much time staring at screens all day, messages flitting across them can lose their touch sometimes. The magic would be restored if I could hold the words in my hands.
  4. Love letters don’t require an immediate response. So much of the world requires instant responses and gratification from me. Texts and messages are meant to be responded to as soon as humanly possible. A letter is sort of reminiscent of simpler times because everything is much slower. I could savor the words on the pages and take as long as I needed to when I reply to my lover.
  5. They’re super thoughtful. Handwritten love letters are truly a lost art for millennials. If someone took the time to craft one for me, it’d be wildly thoughtful of them. It would take much more effort than just shooting off a text message — especially if they put thought into the stationary and decoration of a letter. I may just faint with overwhelming feelings of how thoughtful the gesture is.
  6. It gives the person lots of time to get their thoughts out. So many of us have iMessage where we can see the other person typing out their message. There’s read receipts and seen messages on social media. We can easily drive ourselves crazy! With a handwritten love note, my lover could spend as much time as they needed when constructing their thoughts. I wouldn’t be left wondering why they’re spending so long typing, either.
  7. Love letters are a wonderful surprise. Even talking about sending such a magical note seems like a fantasy dream. The surprise I would feel when receiving a beautiful love letter would be through the roof. I much enjoy being surprised in love and dating — it’s a thrilling feeling to dazzle each other with loving gestures. Call me a hopeless romantic, but a girl can dream for a surprising gesture like a love note.
  8. A scent can be rubbed onto the paper. On top of the potential of lovely stationery, the experience could be brought to a whole new level by rubbing a scent onto the note. Essential oils aren’t hard to come by and some of them are even said to have aphrodisiac effects. Some examples are of aphrodisiacs are rosewood, sandalwood, jasmine, and patchouli. Talk about upping the romanticism!
  9. The letter can be saved and cherished. The lovely Emily Dickinson said, “A letter always seemed to me like immortality because it is the mind alone without corporeal friend.” Sure, I could take screen shots of a text, but let’s be real — that usually gets buried in my phone. A letter, on the other hand, can be saved and cherished for however long I’d like, virtually rendering it immortal.
  10. They’re classy AF. Anyone that takes the time to write a handwritten love letter is a total keeper. It’s an incredibly classy move that would not soon be forgotten. Anyone who’d do this for me would be someone I’d stick around for. I mean, a girl really loves grand romantic gestures and being swept off her feet. This is sure to do the trick.
