As someone who’s older than 18, you like to think you’re an adult. You figure once you’re 20 or 25 that you’re all grown up, but really, there are plenty of 30-year-olds who still act like children. They say dumb crap, they throw tantrums, they play mind games… you get the idea. But being an adult is not about your actual age – it’s about your disposition. You really shouldn’t consider yourself a true grownup unless you’re able to handle real life and all the stuff it throws at you. So here’s how to tell:

  1. You don’t give a crap about what other people say or think. Because who cares? Let them talk and judge all they want.
  2. You take charge of your own life. You don’t let someone else make your decisions. After all, YOU should know what’s best for YOU.
  3. You don’t let anyone use you as a doormat. People know they can’t take advantage of you.
  4. You stand up for yourself and for what you believe in. You know what’s right, and you don’t care if you’re alone.
  5. You have your own ideas. You don’t just take what others say and regurgitate it. You actually think for yourself and analyze what’s coming out of your mouth.
  6. You don’t let small stuff get to you. You don’t have time to be bothered by that douchebag at work. There are more important things to worry about.
  7. It takes a lot to make you cry. If you had a bad day at the office, you accept it. Crap happens, but you’re not going to cry every single time the world dumps more crap into your lap.
  8. You don’t worry constantly about your looks. Your appearance is important, but it’s more about how you carry yourself. You’re confident because of what’s inside, not outside.
  9. Your life doesn’t revolve around a man. You don’t define yourself based on a man’s accomplishments, or really anyone’s but your own.
  10. You’re honest with yourself. You don’t tell yourself lies to make you feel better. You take action.
  11. You get crap done. Everyone needs some downtime at some point, but you know you’ll never get that book written if you spend every weekend in front of the tube.
  12. You have your life in order. Unlike your friends who can’t budget for crap
and are always short on cash, you know how to prioritize and have everything together.
  13. You know what you want and you go after it. You know success doesn’t fall from the sky and money doesn’t grow on trees. You work for what you want.
  14. You treat people as you’d want to be treated. And usually, that means there’s mutual respect.
  15. You judge people based on their character. And not on anything else like their background, looks, or beliefs.
  16. You can take care of yourself. You pay your own bills, wash your own dishes, and take out your own trash. You don’t rely on someone else for anything.
  17. You don’t gossip. You know you’re not in high school anymore. Gossip never does good for anyone, so why do it?
  18. You don’t expect special treatment. Just because you’re a lady doesn’t mean you expect everyone to treat you differently. It’s nice when it happens, of course, but you can also open your own door.
