If there’s one sign that hook-up culture is pervasive, it’s the rampant sending of penis pictures. In my experience, I’ve yet to see a girl who reacts well to an unsolicited one, but men keep on sending them in droves. How is this happening? Is it that guys are really that clueless about what women like, or do they just want to brag about their goods? It’s probably a little bit of both, and a whole lot more.

  1. It’s a sad bid for attention. It’s true, some guys will push women’s buttons knowing they’ll get a negative reaction from them, because any kind of attention is good attention. It’s sad, but it’s what happens when some guys can’t get attention any other way.
  2. They’re trolling you. Some guys get a power trip from it, and actually have fun pissing us off.
  3. They think we’ll get turned on by it. Men are pretty visual in terms of how they get turned on — it’s why sex online is a billion dollar industry. So a lot of guys apparently think that it’s a good way to get a girl turned on, since they would be turned on if they saw pics of our bodies. They’re also doing it in hopes that we’ll reciprocate the favor.
  4. They’re looking for validation. Sadly, for some guys, penis pictures are the way that they fish for compliments because they don’t feel confident enough in themselves. Don’t encourage them, but don’t be mean, either.
  5. Sometimes, girls actually do ask for them. It’s true — on rare occasions, some women actually do ask for penis pictures and enjoy seeing them. Because of this, guys believe that since one girl asked them, every girl secretly wants to see them. Wrong.
  6. For some guys, it’s actually a matter of pride. There are quite a few men out there who are proud of what they’re packing, and believe that women will undoubtedly find it as impressive as they do themselves. As a result, it’s their weird way of strutting.
  7. Some other guys have told them that it works. I’ve personally asked one guy why he sent me one, and his answer was, “My friend told me that chicks really dig it.”
  8. It’s the “Nigerian Prince” scam of online dating. A recent Telegraph article explained how common email scammers will deliberately make their emails hard to believe, simply because it only hooks the most gullible people out there. Sending a penis picture is minimal effort, shows that they are most likely only looking for sex, and practically guarantees that there’s something amiss in his ability to chat up a girl. Needless to say, many men assume that women who respond positively to unsolicited penis pics are either desperate or looking for a fling outright.
  9. Guys with size issues might send modified or “enhanced” penis pics to show that they measure up. They assume that size matters to all women, and they feel (or know) that they don’t have much to offer in that department. To try to enhance their chances at a date, they might send a penis pic that they feel flatters them in hopes of actually getting a shot. It’s sad, but true.
  10. They have no idea how women think, or how to actually talk with us. Some guys just don’t know what to say to girls, don’t know what girls like, or don’t know what to do to court us. As a result of really terrible social skills, all they may be able to muster up is a penis pic.
