38-Year-Old Mom Poses As Teen Girl Online To Catch Sexual Predators

A 38-year-old Connecticut woman has decided to take justice into her own hands and poses as a 15-year-old girl online in order to snare sexual predators. Roo Powell stars in the new Discovery+ docuseries Undercover Underage, which shows how the mom of three turns herself into a teenager on the internet to lure cyber creeps who target minors.

Her plan is pretty incredible. In one of the six episodes of the series, Powell poses as “Flori,” described as an “emotionally fragile high school student from Stamford,” the Daily Beast reports. Flori goes into a chatroom for teenagers where several adult men soon start messaging her.

Perverts are pretty blatant about contacting their victims. The messages that “Flori” gets from the men who reach out to her “range from the disgusting to the disgraceful to the outright abominable,” the Daily Beast adds. That leads Powell on a journey to identify those men and make them pay.

How does Powell make herself seem 20 years younger? She uses “a variety of lighting and touch-up tricks” and is so confident in her transformation that she sends pics to the men she talks to and will even get on FaceTime with them if they ask. She’s gone to the point of creating a “staged bedroom” in her house that looks like a teenage girl’s.

Powell doesn’t work alone. All of her work is in conjunction with Norwalk Police Department Detective Mark Suda. He not only talks to her about her plan but even pretends to be her Uber driver when she goes to meet the men in person. Once she has enough evidence, her non-profit organization Safe from Online Sex Abuse (SOSA) hands it over to the police.

Powell wants to raise awareness about what a serious issue this is. “Online sexual abuse and exploitation can happen quickly and quietly. A minor can be alone in their room and someone can be abusing them via their phone 2,000 miles away,” she told Deadline earlier this month. “My hope is through broadening awareness with this show, we can prevent sex abuse and exploitation of children online, as well as empower parents and caregivers to be a compassionate support system for kids in their communities.”
