If Gingerbread Houses Aren’t Your Thing, How About A Charcuterie Chalet?

Not everyone loves sugar, and that’s OK. I might not understand such blasphemy but I can accept it. If you’re someone who prefers savory to sweet, you probably aren’t interested in making gingerbread houses this Christmas. That doesn’t mean you have to miss out on all the holiday fun, though. Just build a charcuterie chalet instead!

  1. Now that’s what I call delicious. Charcuterie chalets are the savory, meaty alternative to sweet gingerbread houses. Instead of cookies and candy, you build your house out of delicious cold cuts, breadsticks, crackers, and even cheese. You really can’t go wrong.
  2. There are endless customization options. While many gingerbread houses kinda end up looking the same, charcuterie chalets — a term coined by an enterprising Reddit user dkmackay — can be gussied up in a million different ways. Add cherry tomatoes and cucumber slices to spruce up your chalet’s front yard, or line the path to the house with slivered almonds. The sky’s the limit!
  3. This is the perfect addition to your holiday table. There will likely be no shortage of sweet stuff at the Christmas dinner table or at your family/friend holiday gathering, so why not spice things up a bit with a saltier option? Not only will everyone be impressed that you’ve come up with something so innovative (wink wink) but they’ll likely appreciate a pile of cheese and meat. Who wouldn’t?
  4. If you need some guidance, you don’t have to go it alone. There are even recipe tutorials, like this one from The Food Network’s Teri Lyn Fisher, to get you started. She’ll tell you everything you need  to get started and how to put it all together. Of course, these are just basic guidelines and you can get rid of the things you don’t want and add your own personal touches, but if you’re feeling a little lost on how to get started, this is a good place to start.
