Everyone always talks about the relationship milestones you and your partner should reach, but life doesn’t just come to a standstill until you’re in a relationship. What about the single milestones? Here are 10 worth achieving while you’re solo.
Take yourself to the movies.
It might sound weird, but going to the movies alone can be really empowering. It’s not actually about doing something without a partner that’s empowering, but doing something you feel like doing without needing to ask anyone out, whether that’s a friend or partner. Best of all, you can enjoy the latest chick flick without someone rolling their eyes at you.
Spend a weekend with a married couple.
If you have a friend who’s married, take her up on her invitation for you to go spend a weekend with her and her husband. This might make you feel a little like a third wheel, but it’ll give you an important view of what married life is really life. Because let’s be honest: sometimes we glamorize relationships by thinking they’re perfect all the time.
Go on vacation alone.
Once you’ve achieved some of the smaller milestones like those listed above, you can take a big leap and book a solo holiday for yourself. This is fantastic! Imagine how much you’ll learn about yourself when you have only yourself to depend on and when you go exploring a new city or country. You’ll realize that you don’t need a relationship to make you have an amazing life.
Buy yourself flowers.
It might feel silly, but you really don’t need a partner to do that stuff for you. If you really want to feel special and show yourself how much you care, order them online. Surprise!
Tell off the person who’s bothering you.
You don’t need a guy to be your knight in shining armor. When someone’s not getting the hint that you’re not interested, you should tell them in no uncertain terms instead of being too nice. You don’t have to be mean about it, but being assertive will make you walk away feeling like you have balls of steel.
Do something scary by yourself.
Sometimes we crave having a partner so we have someone there for the horrible moments we have to go through. But you’re all the support you need! Think about something that really scares you and then go out and do it. It might be going to a dentist appointment on your own even though you’re terrified or going to a meditation class where you don’t know anyone.
Go dancing alone.
You don’t need friends or a partner to head to the club and dance the night away. If you’ve never hit the dance floor on your own, without having someone there to bust some moves with, you’re missing out on the fun you can have. Best of all, you don’t have to worry about whoever you’re with cramping your style by wanting to leave early.
Decorate your home.
This might sound strange if you already own a home, but it’s really about having your living space exactly how you want it, down to the lampshade in the bedroom and the quirky cat mugs in the kitchen. The point is to design your home without having to consult with someone else about it. Live unapologetically.
Adopt a pet.
There are so many animals in need of a loving home, so why not take the plunge and get a dog or cat, or something more exotic if you like? You’ve got so much love to give and that shouldn’t go to waste. A pet can really make a house feel like a home and it’s such a good feeling to know that you’re having such a positive impact on another being.
Introduce yourself to your spiritual side.
You might not be the religious type, but finding your spirituality is important to help you feel more grounded and explore your inner self as well as your connection to the universe. A spiritual journey will be different things for different people – it might be walking in a forest, going to a mindfulness class alone, or something totally different – so find what feels right for you and then go do it.
