When it comes to sex, masturbation is the safest possible way to get yourself off. There’s no need for birth control, you don’t have to worry about making sure the other person gets off, too, and you definitely can’t infect yourself with an STI. On top of being safe, it’s healthy, fun, and pretty much a sure thing. Even women who can’t climax during sex with a partner are usually able to have an orgasm while masturbating. If that’s not enough for you, here are 10 more reasons you should be touching yourself more often:

  1. Orgasms are good for you. Orgasm as exceedingly good for you. They give you a healthy glow, confidence, can make you smarter, look younger, and some studies have even found that those who orgasm frequently live longer. Yes! Granted, you won’t live forever or anything nuts like that, but you might live longer than those whose lives are lacking on the orgasm front.
  2. You get to know your body extremely well. If you’ve yet to get to know your vagina and all its parts, then you need to do that. For example, did you know that your clitoris isn’t just that little nub on the outside, but an internal organ as well that reaches all up inside? Have you located your G-spot yet? Did you know that your perineum is a big fan of stimulation, too? If you’re like, “WTF?!” to those three questions, then it’s time you really get to masturbating way more so you know what’s going on with your body down there.
  3. It makes for a better sex life. Here’s a very simple fact of life and sexuality: If you know how to get yourself off, then you can guide your partner in doing the same. People who masturbate have better sex lives, because – wait for it – they know their bodies extremely well.
  4. You get to experiment and explore. While sex with your partner allows for exploration too, alone time offers even further exploration, but sans any awkwardness. For example, if you think you might be into butt play, but you’re not ready to talk about it or try it with your partner yet, then in masturbating you can navigate that territory on your own time and see if it’s for you or not. What you learn from experimenting with your own body, you can bring to your sex life, adding another level of intimacy and fun to the mix.
  5. Because you have time to kill. I work from home, so you know what I do during my down time? Exactly. Granted, I have to try out a decent amount of sex toys for my job, but even if I didn’t, I’d probably masturbate to kill time anyway. It feels good and spices up the work day.
  6. You’ll be a happier, cheerier person. Every time we masturbate, our body releases endorphins, and as we learned from Legally Blonde, “Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands.” Elle Woods had a point, because, yes, endorphins do make you happy AF.
  7. It’s an awesome way to combat stress. Everyone has stress. While the levels of stress may vary from person to person, we all have it and masturbation is a great way to manage stress. Sure, you can practice meditation, go to the gym, hit up some yoga classes, and all that good stuff in your quest is to rid your life of stress, but you should always put masturbation on that list, too.
  8. It will keep you feeling sexual. Whether you’re in a relationship or single, masturbation keeps you feeling sexual and sexy. In addition to endorphins, orgasms release oxytocin, the love hormone, so it keeps your body and mind thinking about sex, which is a good thing.
  9. Because you want to. I’m of the belief that if you want to do something, you should just do it. Granted, this has gotten me into trouble sometimes, but when it comes to wanting to masturbate as often as possible, you’ll be OK. So go for it.
  10. It’s healthy as hell. It’s so healthy! It’s natural! It’s awesome! It’s great for your body, mind, your stress levels, your heart health, your sexuality, and you never know what little goody you’re going to discover! What other reason could you possibly need?
