New Mom Uses Vibrator To Clear Baby’s Congestion, Sparking Debate

A new mom shared a genius hack she discovered to treat her baby’s congestion: using a vibrator on the little one’s back! The mother sent a photo of the method in action to the Facebook group Melons and Cuties, and while many parents were intrigued by the idea, others were not so impressed and thought it was inappropriate. You can’t please everyone!

  1. It’s not actually that weird. As the moderator of Melons and Cuties explained, using a vibrator on a baby’s back is used often in hospitals for this very problem. “Our customer shares her remedy for chest congestion!! Use on baby’s back while sitting in a steamy bathroom. Brilliant!!!” they wrote. “Note that many hospitals and respiratory therapists use these in the treatment of respiratory issues on the BACK in hospital settings. It is common practice.”
  2. Many moms praised the method. They’d tried it themselves and could speak to its success. “This works. I tried it on my son (with a brand new vibrator before anyone calls me disgusting again..)” one mom wrote. “He’s had croup and a chest infection. He coughed up so much crap yesterday after spending hours in emergency the night before struggling to breathe.”
  3. Not everything has to be sexual. Yes, vibrators are generally sold for a specific purpose, but that doesn’t mean they’re inherently sexual. “Just because something has a sexual purpose some of the time does not mean that’s the only thing it’s good for. This logic also applies to people,” one mom wrote. “Having a sick child can be hellish. Within reason I say whatever works.”
  4. Congestion isn’t all that vibrators are good for. Other commenters remarked that they’d seen them work for palate desensitization, unclogging milk ducts, and even as a comfort item under crib mattresses for fussy babies to help them sleep. Why not?
  5. Not everyone was so positive. There were obviously some judgmental people on the group who couldn’t get down with this method, but it makes you wonder if they’ve ever dealt with a sick baby. If it’s clean, safe, and works, what’s the problem?
