Newlywed Couple Serves Pizza Instead Of Cake At Their Wedding Reception

There’s no doubt about it: cake is delicious. Personally, I’m a fan of devil’s food cake with vanilla frosting, but I’m really not picky. That being said, I almost feel like I love pizza more. Newlyweds Jess Melara and Tony Sanchez certainly do, which is why they decided to serve a pizza cake at their wedding in lieu of the traditional sweet treat.

It was a surprise for the guests. The couple, who were actually high school sweethearts, got married in Miami in December and decided to surprise their guests with a tower of delicious cheesy pizza instead of a traditional wedding cake. “Tony and I love pizza and aren’t huge fans of cake, so we surprised our guests with pizza cake,” Jess told Wedding Chicks. “It was saucy and delicious and what pizza dreams are made of.”

Don’t worry, they still had some sweet options. While it’s doubtful that the couple had any complaints about serving pizza at the reception, Jess and Tony still made sure to have some sweet stuff available for those who prefer it (or just like a little of both). “We offered the pizza along with other snacks and everyone was excited to have some late-night eats,” Jess told Huffington Post. “We didn’t forget the dessert lovers though. We also had homemade Funfetti cake bars and a gelato truck.” YUM!

They also had some baseball-themed elements. Tony plays for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, so they gave out mini baseball bat keychains as escort cards and had drink napkins with baseball phrases like “Game over” and “Fits like a glove.”

They even gave out Cracker Jacks as dessert. I remember getting boxes of Cracker Jacks as a kid and absolutely loving them, especially since in addition to being tasty, they came with a prize inside. Every guest at Jess and Tony’s wedding got to go home with a box, which obviously also ties into the baseball theme (just sing “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” in your head).

All in all, this is what weddings are about. While many people get caught up on having the fanciest, most extravagant ceremony ever, that totally misses the point. Your wedding day should be about celebrating who you are as individuals and as a couple with little touches that mean a lot to you and the people who love you. It looks like Jess and Tony really understood that, and thank goodness pizza was part of it.
