The first time you meet his family, it’s always a nerve-racking experience. You want them to like you, which means you’re trying to put your best foot forward. But human beings are an unpredictable bunch, and everyone has a weird relative that will seemingly stop at nothing to make things interesting. The key is to relax and be yourself, but every so often something awkward will happen that you have no control over. Here’s hoping it’s not one of these things:
- His mom brings up his ex-girlfriend with whom she’s still in touch. Clearly she’s not ready to accept her son has moved on, and she’s not afraid to let you know it. It’s going to be an uphill battle.
- You realize you matched with his cousin on Tinder. Online dating has made it possible to meet people you never would have come across otherwise, and while that’s great, it could also lead to awkward “don’t I know you?” moments. Hopefully his cousin either doesn’t recognize you or has enough sense to keep his mouth shut.
- His uncle hits on you. If it wasn’t bad enough that his cousin was one of your Tinder matches, his inappropriately drunk uncle actually has the balls to make a move. Apparently you’re just this family’s type.
- You make a joke that unintentionally offends someone. It might be a joke that your boyfriend and all your friends would find hilarious, but if you don’t know your crowd, it’s better to tread lightly in the controversial joke department. At least until you get to know them a little better.
- You clog the toilet. Maybe it’s just me, but clogging a toilet at someone else’s house is right up there with my worst nightmares. And just because the toilet overflows doesn’t mean it was even your fault, but no one, no one is going to believe that. Especially not his dad, who’s taking a plunger to the thing while you die of embarrassment.
- You find out your boyfriend has been lying about something. So he told you that he’s been single for over a year, but his mom ends up outing him as a liar when she brings up how he brought his ex to Thanksgiving, which was only a couple months ago.
- You’re so hungover that you get sick in the bathroom. You probably won’t be looking your best, or be at the top of your game when it comes to conversation if you’re focused on suppressing the urge to puke the whole time.
- His mom starts planning the wedding. While it’s great that she likes you so much, if she starts talking about how much she loves planning weddings when you just met her, it’s pretty obvious that she’s both irrational and the type who will try to control everything about your wedding. If you ever end up having one that is.
- His parents mention how badly they want grand kids. This is even worse if he’s an only child, because you just know they’re looking you up and down and mentally calculating how fertile you are.
- You have a huge fight and break up. On the other hand, if you have a giant fight the first time you’re meeting his family, this relationship is doomed, and it’s probably best if your cut your losses now.
