10 Excuses to Banish From Your Vocabulary Forever

There are always reasons not to do something, and unfortunately we usually let the negative outweigh the positive, especially when something is outside our comfort zone. It can be hard to find the motivation when excuses are so easy to fall back on, so why not make a list of excuses you are absolutely, under no circumstances, allowed to use for anything? From now on you’re going to have to have a legitimate reason not to do that thing you’ve been meaning to do.

  1. I’m too lazy. Really? Are you hearing yourself? We’d all rather spend every night watching Netflix in our pajamas, but unless you were born wealthy, well-respected, and accomplished, then another episode of Orange in the New Black isn’t going to make all your dreams come true.
  2. I’m too tired. Getting enough sleep is important, sure. But like they say, you can sleep when you’re dead.
  3. It’s too late now. Think you’ve missed your chance? Find a way to get another one. Or just create one. Take your cue from Scandal‘s Olivia Pope and always have another move up your sleeve.
  4. What’s the point? That kind of defeatist attitude isn’t going to get you anywhere, and it just makes you sound pathetic. The point of trying is you tried, and that’s infinitely better than never even making an attempt.
  5. He won’t like me anyway. Except maybe he will. How can you possible know unless you put yourself out there? Rejection is always a possibility, and it sucks, but you’ll get over it, and eventually the right guy will appreciate you for making the first move.
  6. I hate working out. No one is saying you have to be a gym rat to get in shape. Being healthy is just about staying active in whatever way works for you. If you hate running, don’t run. Find something more your speed like yoga, or kick boxing. With so many forms of exercise available, there’s no way you can’t find something that you can at least tolerate.
  7. I’ll do it tomorrow. Will you? Or are you just putting it off so you can say later that you forgot about it? Whatever it is, do it now. Because why put off until tomorrow what you can do today?
  8. It’s not my fault. There are some things that we have no control over, but blaming the world for all our problems isn’t going to help. Playing the role of helpless victim isn’t going to inspire confidence in others, nor will it give you any sense of control over your own life.
  9. I’ll never be good enough. Ironically, it’s your excuses that are giving you such low self esteem in the first place. You feel like you aren’t good enough because you never work hard enough to achieve what you want to achieve, but you aren’t achieving what you want to because you think you can’t. And the cycle continues. It’s up to you to break it.
  10. But what if I fail? Of course you can’t fail if you don’t try, but you also can’t succeed. Would you be content staying exactly where you are right now for the rest of your life because you didn’t take a risk? Some might say that’s a failure in its own right.
