Chances are that if you’re a woman, you’ve been falsely accused of doing something for male attention, as if that’s all that matters to us in life. In fact, most of the time, the things we say and do are actually for us. Here are 10 things we do that have nothing to do with guys, no matter what they think.

  1. Wear makeup. Some women like makeup and others don’t. The ones that do often hear from guys that they don’t need makeup, and they’re beautiful without it. Here’s the thing, guys — we wear it because we love it, not because we’re seeking your validation. Keep the advice to yourself!
  2. Get dressed up. Believe it or not, when we put on clothes we’re taking our own comfort and desires into account. Men rarely ever have anything to do with it, so harassing us for wearing a skirt, then claiming that we’re “asking for it” because of how we’re dressed is totally wrong, not to mention screwed up.
  3. Enjoying typically male hobbies or entertainment. If we’re into sports or comic books, then men feel the need to quiz our knowledge. If we happen to be up on it, then we must have had an ex-boyfriend that got us into it, or we only like it to get men’s attention. Get over yourselves! There are female geeks and jocks that love it simply because we actually enjoy it. Women hardly need to put that much work to get men’s attention, anyway.
  4. Go out to bars or clubs. Sometimes we just want to go out with our friends and blow off some steam. Yes, this might include meeting guys, but a lot of the time it’s about having fun with expectations of going home alone. Don’t approach every girl and then get angry at us if we don’t want to give you the time of day. A lot of the time, going out has nothing to do with you.
  5. Get plastic surgery. There’s still a stigma surrounding plastic surgery, and many assume women get it to be more attractive for men. However, just like makeup and clothes, it’s been found that women tend to undergo cosmetic procedures to feel better about ourselves.
  6. Going out onto the dance floor. Sure, we can dance with a male partner, but dancing alone or with our female friends can be even more fun. It’s nauseating when people act like our dancing is just asking for male attention. Chances are we’re not interested, we’re just getting our lives on the dance floor!
  7. Work out. There is a laundry list of health and self-esteem reasons to hit the gym, but many guys still think the only reason why we do it is to stay thin to get a man. Working out sucks, but partially because dudes think it’s all about them. This is crazy — we’re talking about health here. Not everything is about sex.
  8. Have sex. It’s 2016, and you’ll still hear guys talk about sex as if we don’t enjoy it and we’re doing it as a favor. Women have sex because it’s fun, and it’s what we want to do. It’s not a sign of having low self-esteem. If done right, you didn’t degrade us or take something from us. It’s two consensual people engaging in an act, so stop with the weird double standards.
  9. Learn to cook. You might be seeing memes online talking about women who can’t cook not being able to get a man, as if that’s the reason we should have these skills. We learn to cook because we need to eat every day! If you don’t know how to as a grown man, then pick up a few recipes and start watching some how-to videos.
  10. Have male friends. Women who have male friends are viewed as the type that just want attention because they want to find a boyfriend. Newsflash: we have friends of both genders because they add something to our lives. This is hardly about a guy’s penis and more about their companionship, which can be more valuable.
