If you’ve been single for more than a few months, you’ve already heard all of the clichés. Your family and friends probably use them to cheer you up all the time, since they assume that you’re miserable without a boyfriend. Whether or not that’s the case, here are a few true things that are hard to believe when you’ve been single for ages:

  1. “You’ll find someone when you least expect it.” You’ve stopped waiting for Prince Charming to sweep you off your feet. A good man is the last thing you’re expecting to see, so where is he, then?
  2. “One day, you’ll miss being single.” You can’t imagine missing the times when you got stood up or stayed up sexting random men over Tinder. It’s not really your idea of a good time.
  3. “You’re too picky.” You’ve been single for so long that you’ve actually thought about contacting that weirdo who had a crush on you back in high school. So no, you’re definitely not too picky.
  4. “You need to learn to love yourself first.” You’re good at your job, you’re an amazing gift giver, and your puns are hilarious. You already love yourself—you’re just waiting for a man who can say the same.
  5. “You haven’t found the right person yet.”  That means the man who smiled at you at Chipotle last week wasn’t actually meant to be your husband. So you can stop daydreaming about him.
  6. “Anyone would be lucky to have you.” Would they really be lucky to deal with your constant jealousy, fear of commitment, and Netflix obsession? You’re not quite sure if “lucky” is the word you would use, but they’d definitely have some fun stories to tell.
  7. “You need to put yourself out there.” You go out to bars with your friends, use online dating sites, and flirt with your coworkers. How much more can you really go out?
  8. “There are plenty of fish in the sea.” You’ve probably been told you’re a “great catch” too, because the dating world is filled with fishing metaphors. Of course, just because there are plenty of men in the world doesn’t mean that any of them are worth your time.
  9. “You’re better off without him.” You hear this every time your crush gets away, but it’s hard to believe. Even if he would’ve been a horrible boyfriend, he would’ve been fun to sleep with at least once or twice.
  10. “You deserve love.” Deep down, you know it’s the truth, since you’re an amazing woman and all, but it’s still hard to buy. After all, being single can mess with your mind.
