If Sex and the City taught us anything, it’s that having a few close friends is as essential as oxygen. If you’re lucky enough to have a best friend who really gets you, it probably feels like without her, you’d completely lose your mind. The best BFFs are the ones who keep you sane even when they don’t even realize they’re doing it. Here’s how:
She answers your texts with lightning speed.
From something funny you overheard while in line at Starbucks to a request for help picking out the right shoes for a last minute date, you know if you text her, she’ll respond. There’s never any of those “sorry, just saw this” messages three days later from her.
She listens to your rants.
She knows all your pet peeves and she’ll let you rant and rave about how much you hate when people blast their music without headphones on public transit and how nothing should ever have cilantro in it, ever. She might roll her eyes at you sometimes, but it’s all part of her charm.
She calls you out when you’re being unreasonable.
Sometimes your emotions can get away from you—that’s exactly why you need a friend who isn’t afraid to tell you you’re acting crazy. An outside perspective from someone you trust might be just what you need to start thinking rationally again.
She’s always up for a last minute drink.
Sometimes after a long day, there’s nothing that you want more than a drink. If she’s not a drinker, she’ll still either come along for the half-priced happy hour apps or suggest grabbing a tea instead. The point is, she can tell when you need to wind down and she’ll always make time for you.
She humors your whims.
She agreed to go to only vegetarian restaurants that time you tried (and failed) to cut meat from your diet, showed up to a 7 a.m. barre class when you splurged on an unlimited month pass and even got you a book on crocheting when you claimed you wanted to start your own Etsy shop. The bottom line is, no matter what you’re up to, she’s always supportive.
She knows how to cheer you up.
From work problems to guy problems, your best friend knows when you’re in a mood and she knows exactly how to snap you out of it. Maybe you need to get your mind off things with a girls’ night or a trip to the new ice cream place downtown. Whatever it is that’s bothering you, she’ll either let you talk about it or completely understand if you don’t want to talk about it at all.
She’s the best wing woman.
Not only does she know your type to a T, but she’s always there to back you up to whatever way you need. She’ll talk to the object of your desire’s nerdy friend, sing your praises while you’re in the bathroom, and run interference when a guy you’re not interested in thinks he has a chance.
She’s always down to binge watch reality TV with you.
Watching episode after episode of The Real Housewives is fun and all, but it’s even better if you have someone to laugh with. You might not love all the exact same shows, but there are a couple that you both watch religiously—and watching them together is always a bright spot in your week.
She can finish your sentences.
Your BFF knows you so well that it’s not uncommon for her to know exactly what you’re thinking before you even say it out loud. Sometimes it’s funny and other times it reminds you how lucky you are to have someone in your life that really gets you.
She reminds you that you’re worthy.
If someone as awesome as her wants to be your friend, it must be because you’re pretty awesome too. If she notices you’re selling yourself short, she’ll remind you that you deserve the best—all you have to do is believe it too.
She can sense your moods.
You can’t hide much from your BFF and that includes your moods. She can even tell from your texts if you’re having a bad day, and she knows when it’s best to just leave you alone and when you need someone to yank you out of your funk. Sometimes it’s annoying that she knows you that well, but obviously you wouldn’t trade her for the world.
She makes you feel loved.
No matter the current state of your love life, you know you’ll always have her in your corner looking out for you. She wants the best for you and also makes being single a lot less lonely than it would be if she weren’t around.
She doesn’t always agree with you.
Just because you’re besties doesn’t mean you always see eye to eye. You’re both still your own people with your own opinions and you’re going to get in an argument every once in awhile. The good news is it doesn’t matter—you never stay mad at each other for long.
She’ll go out of her way when you need her.
There are those friends that will lend a helping hand if it’s convenient for them and then there’s your BFF. No matter what you need, she’ll find a way to be there for you. She’s always the person you call when you did something stupid and you need someone who won’t judge you for it, but that doesn’t mean she won’t let you know you’re an idiot.
You can tell her things you can’t tell other people.
There are some friends who only know a certain side of you, but your BFF knows the good, the bad and the ugly. You constantly find yourself spilling the beans to her about things you never thought you’d tell anyone—and it’s totally fine because you know she’ll still love you no matter what.
