Kids can be pointlessly and needlessly cruel, singling out others for no reason other than that they’re different from themselves. That’s what happened with one mom, who noticed that her teenage son was making fun of a classmate because of his clothes at school. Realizing that she needed to impart a valuable lesson, she took teaching it into her own hands.
- Her son thought he was better than others whose clothes cost less. “So lately, my 13 year old son had been acting a little… entitled,” her Facebook post reads, “Acting like he’s too good to shop at Wal-Mart or making snarky comments about kids at school who shop at the goodwill and quite a few other things. I don’t tolerate that.”
- What’s wrong with Goodwill? Not only is having a store like it important to so many families that might not otherwise be able to afford to get clothes, but it also happens to have some pretty cool clothes there if you’ve got a good eye and a bit of patience to scroll through the racks.
- The mom made her son shop at Goodwill. After making him use some of his own savings, she told her son that he would have to get an entire week’s worth of school clothes from the thrift store and deal with it. “Today, he took his own $20.00 to the goodwill to buy clothes to wear the entire week to school. Whatever he found is what he would have to wear,” she said.
- Money isn’t everything. That’s what she wanted her son to realize, though perhaps unsurprisingly, he wasn’t all that keen on the lesson. She admitted that he “shed a few tears” but insisted that she did the right thing. “I firmly believe in 15 years he will look back and laugh at the day his Mom made him shop at Goodwill.”
- Many people applauded the mom. Not only did they think it was great that the family was shopping at Goodwill, but they thought it was great that the mom wanted her son to be more thoughtful and less materialistic. However, others believed that the son never should have gotten to this point to begin with. “Should have started before 13,” wrote one commenter. “Maybe he wouldn’t be acting like that now if he’d learned this lesson beforehand.”
