Being a flight attendant might seem like a glamorous job, but it’s also extremely hard work. Not only are you dealing with difficult flyers and running after them all the time, but you’re generally on your feet for 12 hours or longer. Add in the fact that female stewardesses are often in heels and skirts, and this can make for a very uncomfortable workday. However, one airline is ready to change things.

- Standard flight attendant outfits simply aren’t practical. “Twelve hours on your feet, flying from Kyiv to Zanzibar and back,” flight attendant Daria Solomennaya said of a typical shift. “If you wear high heels, you are hardly able to walk afterwards.” Can you imagine spending more than half your day in a tight pencil skirt, high heels, and a blazer while doing physical work? Not great. The industry has long been in need of an overhaul and it seems like it’s finally starting to happen.
- Eastern European airline SkyUp has made the change. SkyUp, based out of Ukraine, has kept the airline’s beautiful, bright orange shade in their new uniforms, but the skirts and heels are gone and in their place, there are now pants and sneakers. My feet can already feel the relief!
- The new outfits are way more fashionable. While the blazers remain, female flight attendants can be way more stylish in addition to more comfortable. The white Nike Air Max 270s will give cushion to sore feet while looking amazing, and the trousers and blazer combo look amazing together.
- Why should female flight attendants be sexualized? Part of the old uniform plays into a stereotype of some sort of inherent sexiness of the job that simply doesn’t exist. “A flight attendant’s work is not that romantic. It’s hard,” SkyUp’s head of marketing Marianna Grygorash said. “We realized that our female flight attendants didn’t want to be seen as ‘sexualized and playful.'” Here’s hoping the new uniforms make a major difference in every way and that other airlines follow suit!
