The menu comes, and everyone starts flipping through, except for one person. They do maybe thirty seconds of browsing, mostly for the table’s benefit because they already know they’re getting the pad see ew. The same pad see ew as last time, and the time before that, and every visit since forever.
Somebody jokes that it wouldn’t kill them to try new things. Somebody else, lovingly, says it’s so boring. The repeat orderer shrugs and orders the pad see ew.
Twenty minutes later, the rest of the table is finding out whether the special was a good idea. The repeat orderer already knows.
Psychology has come at this behavior from three directions, and none of them describe a boring person. What they describe instead is a person making a rational bet that the rest of the table systematically gets wrong.
Thousands of food diaries show repetition has a job
This is pretty common behavior, and the data there is direct and slightly surprising.
Behavioral scientists Romain Cadario and Carey Morewedge analyzed the food diaries of 3,899 people, 2,624 in France and 1,275 in the United States, tracking how often people ate the exact same meal across a week.
Repetition turned out to be a large feature of ordinary eating. Sixty-eight percent of people ate the same breakfast at least twice in a single week.
Dinner was the reverse. Only 9 percent repeated one.
The pattern mattered more than the volume. People repeated when a meal’s job was practical, fueling the day, keeping things easy, hitting a health target. They varied when a meal’s job was pleasure.
Repetition, in other words, tracked what people wanted the meal to accomplish. It was goal-driven, not imagination-deprived.
Which puts the restaurant repeater somewhere more interesting than boring. Dinner out is the meal where nearly everybody chases variety, and they’re running breakfast logic on it.
They’ve decided what this meal is for. It’s for being good, reliably and provably good. They already hold the verified answer to that question, so re-asking it every visit would be the irrational move.
Ordering the favorite is what real preference looks like
The finding that should permanently retire the teasing shows the repeat orderer is the only one at the table whose choices match real human preference.
Behavioral scientists have known since the early 1990s about something called diversification bias. When people choose several things in advance, a week of snacks, a set of meals for the future, they load up on variety.
But when people choose one thing at a time, in the moment, right before consuming it, the variety collapses. They pick the favorite. Again and again.
In the classic demonstration, Daniel Read and George Loewenstein had people select three snacks from the same six options. Choosers picking all three at once diversified heavily. Choosers picking one at a time mostly repeated their favorite.
The researchers’ conclusion cut against every “spice of life” instinct. The variety-loading often produced worse outcomes, because people drastically overestimate how quickly they will tire of what they love.
Set that against the restaurant table. The friends rotating through the menu are running the in-advance strategy, choosing for an imagined future self who craves novelty.
The repeat orderer is running the in-the-moment strategy, choosing for the real self who is about to eat. The research says the second self is the better forecaster.

The people avoiding repeats are the ones mispredicting
Still, the accusation lingering under “boring” is about loss. Surely the repeater is missing out. All those unexplored dishes, all that foregone discovery.
Psychology tested that assumption directly, and it runs the other way.
In a 2019 paper in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, University of Chicago behavioral scientist Ed O’Brien ran a series of studies on repeat experiences: revisiting a museum exhibit, rewatching a film, replaying a game.
Across the board, people predicted the second time would be a dull echo of the first. And across the board, the repeats were more enjoyable than predicted, sometimes as enjoyable as something brand new, sometimes more.
O’Brien’s own reading is that a revisited experience can register as closer to new than anyone expects, and that repetition carries more variety than people credit it with.
His explanation: doing something once creates an inflated sense of having fully seen it, when complex experiences keep yielding new details on re-exposure. A great dish is a complex experience.
His final studies pushed it further. After watching a virtual walking tour of one city, 92 percent of participants chose a tour of a new city over rewatching the first, and most gave up around 12 percent of their study payment to avoid the repeat.
That is the menu at the table, described in laboratory conditions. The people convinced the repeater is missing out are the ones paying money to miss out.
What the repeat order protects
Put the three literatures together, and the behavior stops looking like a rut and starts looking like a finished search.
Computer scientists call the underlying tradeoff explore versus exploit. Every chooser splits effort between trying new options to learn what is good and cashing in on the best option found so far.
Exploration is how you find the pad see ew. Exploitation is how you enjoy it. Neither phase is the smart one. They are phases.
The repeat orderer isn’t refusing to explore. At this restaurant, they already did. They ran the experiments, absorbed the mediocre curries and the disappointing specials, and located the peak.
Ordering it every time isn’t fear of the menu. It’s the menu, solved. The exploring simply moved to where it still pays off: new restaurants, new cities, new cuisines, where there’s still something to learn.
And the guaranteed good experience they are protecting is not a small thing. A restaurant meal is a couple of hours, real money, and often the best part of somebody’s week.
Staking that on a coin flip has a cost the table never counts, because the roulette players quietly forget their losses. The repeater remembers exactly what they are getting.
One caveat worth acknowledging
Novelty isn’t a scam. Variety does fight satiation over tight loops, new experiences carry real benefits, and O’Brien’s research documents a prediction error, which is not the same as repeats always winning.
A person who never explores anything, anywhere, has traded discovery for certainty at a rate that eventually stops paying.
And motivation matters. Ordering the favorite because it is the verified peak is strategy. Ordering it because the possibility of a disappointing meal produces real dread is a different pattern with a different conversation attached.
But for the ordinary version, the friend who closes the menu and asks for the usual, the science is on their side. Thousands of food diaries say the repetition is purposeful.
The choice research says favorites-on-repeat is what unfiltered preference looks like. The repeat-experience research says the pleasure holds up better than anyone predicts.
The friend has already done the work. They ran the experiments, found the peak, and now they spend the meal eating something good instead of finding out. The rest of the table is still gathering data.
