When you’re stuck on something, the instinct is to stay at your desk.

Close the tabs, put your phone away, and think harder. The desk is where you do your work, so the desk must be where you solve the hard problems.

Right?

Apparently, two studies say the opposite. The thing you’re stuck on is more likely to unstick when you get up and do something else.

The reason has nothing to do with willpower or discipline. It has to do with what your brain does when you stop staring at the problem.

When people walked, creative output went way up

Marily Oppezzo, a psychologist at Stanford, and Daniel Schwartz, a professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Education, ran four experiments with 176 people. They wanted to know whether the simple act of walking changed how people thought.

They used a standard creativity test: give someone an everyday object, like a button, and ask them to come up with as many alternate uses for it as they can in four minutes.

The more uses, and the more original they are, the higher the score.

When people did the test while walking, their creative output rose by 60% compared to when they did it sitting down. The vast majority of participants were more creative on their feet than in their chairs.

It wasn’t a subtle bump. It was a different mode of thinking.

One important thing the study also found: walking boosted the brainstorming kind of thinking, where you need lots of ideas. It didn’t help with the kind of thinking where there’s one right answer.

So it’s not that walking makes you smarter. It’s that walking makes you wider, more willing to reach for the thing that isn’t obvious.

Surprisingly, the environment people were walking in didn’t matter

Oppezzo expected the outdoor walkers to outperform everyone. A path on the Stanford campus, trees, sunlight, fresh air. That’s the version of walking that gets romanticized in every productivity article.

But walking on a treadmill in a small, boring room, facing a blank wall, produced the same boost. The scenery wasn’t the ingredient. The walking was.

That matters because it means this isn’t about nature or escaping your office or needing a change of scenery. It’s something about the physical act of putting one foot in front of the other that shifts how the brain generates ideas.

Oppezzo said she was surprised by how strong the treadmill results were, given how dull the setup was.

The study also found that the creative boost carried over briefly even after people sat back down. Walking primed something that kept running for a few minutes after the movement stopped.

An easy task during a break beat resting and concentrating harder

A separate study at UC Santa Barbara, led by Benjamin Baird and Jonathan Schooler, tested a different but related idea: what kind of break helps you solve problems you’re already stuck on?

They gave 145 undergraduates a set of creativity problems, then split them into groups for a 12-minute break. One group did a demanding memory task. One group did an easy, almost mindless reaction-time task. One group just rested. One group got no break at all.

After the break, everyone went back to the creativity problems. The group that had done the easy, mindless task outperformed all three other groups on the problems they’d already been working on before the break.

Not resting. Not concentrating on something hard. Not pushing through. The thing that helped most was doing something so simple that their minds wandered.

And the wandering is what did the work. The improvement only showed up on problems they’d already encountered. New problems didn’t benefit.

The brain wasn’t getting generally more creative. It was chewing on the specific thing it had been stuck on, in the background, while attention was somewhere else.

Thinking harder about a stuck problem is overworking it

When you knead dough past the point where it’s ready, it gets tight. It tears instead of stretching. The only fix is to walk away and let it rest, and when you come back, it’s elastic again. Nobody made that happen. It happened because you stopped.

A stuck problem works the same way. You’ve been looking at it from every angle you can think of, which means you’ve been looking at it from the same three angles repeatedly, because those are the ones your conscious mind can access while it’s focused.

The walk or the easy task lets the focused part step aside.

And the less-focused part, the one that runs while you’re folding laundry or walking to the corner, is better at making connections between things that don’t obviously belong together. That’s where new ideas tend to come from.

The research used lab tasks, but you’ve felt this happen

Both studies have limits worth naming. They used lab creativity tasks, not real-world problems. The Stanford study tested college students and other adults in controlled conditions, not people trying to solve a real work problem at 2 p.m. on a Wednesday. Whether the effect scales to messier, more complex thinking is a fair question the research hasn’t fully answered yet.

But the finding lines up with something most people already know from experience.

The answer to the email you’ve been drafting for an hour tends to arrive in the shower. The solution to the thing you couldn’t figure out at your desk comes to you in the car.

That’s not coincidence. That’s incubation doing exactly what these studies measured.

Get up, do something easy, and let the answer come to you

You don’t need a trail or a park. A treadmill facing a wall works. A walk around the block works. Folding laundry or washing the dishes works, as long as it’s easy enough that your mind drifts.

The one thing both studies agree doesn’t work is the thing most people default to: sitting at the desk and concentrating harder.

Focusing harder is the right tool when the problem has a clear path, and you just need to execute. When you’re stuck, it’s the wrong tool. The answer isn’t somewhere you can get to by looking in the same direction more intently.

So the next time you’re staring at something that won’t move, get up. Not to take a break from the problem, but to let a different part of your brain take a turn with it.
