The psychology of why walking helps you think, and why it only works for one kind of thinking

You’ve been stuck on the same problem for an hour. The email won’t write itself, the project has no shape, the opening line isn’t coming. You’ve tried rearranging, starting over, staring harder. Nothing.

So you get up, put your shoes on, and walk around the block. And somewhere around minute twenty, your brain opens back up. You’ve got three new ways to approach it, a better first sentence, an angle you couldn’t see while you were sitting there forcing it.

There’s research behind that feeling. But the interesting part isn’t just that walking helps you think. It’s that walking only seems to help with one kind of thinking, and it can make the other kind slightly worse.

Walking helped people come up with 60 percent more ideas

Marily Oppezzo, then a doctoral researcher at Stanford, and Daniel Schwartz, a professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Education, ran four experiments with 176 people. They wanted to know whether the simple act of walking changed how people thought.

They used a standard creativity test: give someone an everyday object, like a button or a tire, and ask them to list as many unusual uses as they can in four minutes. The more uses, and the more original, the higher the score. The walking sessions lasted five to sixteen minutes, depending on the task.

When people did the test while walking, their creative output rose by about 60 percent compared to sitting. 81 percent of participants were more creative on their feet than in their chairs. It wasn’t a subtle difference.

This is the mode of thinking you use when you’re brainstorming, when you’re trying to find another angle on a project, write a pitch, or ask yourself what else could work here?

Psychologists call it divergent thinking, which just means generating lots of possibilities instead of narrowing down to one.

It wasn’t the scenery that did anything, it was the movement

You’d expect outdoor walks to be the key factor. A path across campus, sunlight, fresh air, the whole package. And they helped.

But so did walking on a treadmill in a small room facing a blank wall. The boost didn’t come from a change of scenery or from being outside. It came from the physical act of walking itself.

Oppezzo said she was surprised by how strong the treadmill results were, given how boring the setup was.

Christian Rominger, a researcher at the University of Graz, and his team confirmed this from a different angle in 2024. They tracked people’s daily step counts and then tested their creative thinking.

The people who walked more in everyday life performed better on creative ideation tasks. Not in a lab. Just in their normal days.

The Stanford work also showed that some of the creative benefit carried over briefly after people stopped walking and sat back down.

The researchers didn’t pin down one exact mechanism, and they were careful not to overclaim it. But the basic idea is that walking seems to loosen the way your attention moves.

Sitting still, especially when you’re stuck, you tend to keep forcing the same path. You try one route, it doesn’t work, and you try it again slightly differently, and again.

Walking interrupts that loop. Your attention drifts a little, thoughts connect in ways they weren’t connecting before, and you’re less locked into judging every idea the moment it appears.

Walking doesn’t hand you a solution. It gives you more options, and one of those is usually better than the single idea you were grinding toward at your desk.

That said, moving did make one kind of thinking worse

The same Stanford experiments also tested a different type of task. Instead of asking people to generate lots of ideas, they gave them one with a single correct answer: three words on a card, and you had to find the one word that connects all three.

Walking didn’t help with that. It made performance slightly worse, and the pattern held across participants.

This is the distinction that changes how you use a walk.

Walking opens the field. It spreads your thinking out and gets more possibilities onto the table. But when you need to close the field and zero in on one right answer, that same openness works against you.

So a walk might help you think of five ways to fix a broken project, but it probably won’t help you decide which of those five is best.

It might give you three possible opening lines, but it’s not where you should go to proofread the final draft.

Psychologists call this second kind convergent thinking. It needs precision, focus, and logic. The same looseness that fuels divergent thinking works against you when you need to evaluate and choose.

Walk when you need to think of options, sit when you need to make a judgment call

Once you know the split, you can use it on purpose.

Walk when you’re stuck at the beginning of something. When the page is blank, the brief is vague, and the problem has no shape yet. That’s divergent territory, and walking is built for it.

Then come back to the desk to sort, rank, edit, choose, and decide. That’s convergent territory, and it needs the stillness and focus that a chair and a closed door were made for.

A 2024 review of dozens of experiments confirmed that low-intensity walking reliably boosts divergent thinking, even after just a few minutes.

So the walk can be the idea phase and the chair can be the decision phase, and you don’t lose what you came up with in between.

Of course, walking isn’t a magic creativity trick. Researchers still don’t know the full mechanism behind it, and the studies were done with specific lab tasks, not with your inbox or your quarterly report.

But the useful takeaway is simple: if you’re staring at a problem and demanding a single answer, the walk works best when you shift to asking for possibilities.

Sometimes the point of the walk isn’t to solve the problem. It’s to come back with more than one way to solve it.
