Psychology says people who can’t sleep the first night in a hotel or a guest room aren’t fussy — sleep labs found one half of the brain stays partly on watch in an unfamiliar place, and researchers call it the first-night effect

You’re on vacation, or staying at a friend’s place, or visiting your parents for the weekend. You got there hours ago. You explored, had dinner, talked to people, did all the things. And now finally comes the part you’ve been waiting for: sleep.

Except your head hits the pillow and you’re wide awake. The mattress feels wrong. The hallway is too loud. The air conditioner keeps clicking on. You don’t have your pillow, your blanket, your usual sounds.

And after lying there for an hour, it starts to feel embarrassingly fussy.

Especially when this happens every single time you sleep somewhere new.

Sleep researchers have a name for it: the first-night effect. And your brain may be doing exactly what it thinks it’s supposed to do.

The first night, one side of your brain is on watch

Sleep labs have known about this for decades. People consistently sleep worse their first night in a lab: they take longer to fall asleep, wake more during the night, get less total sleep, and show changes in their sleep stages.

Labs got so used to it that they started throwing out the first night of data entirely and building an extra “adaptation night” into every study.

But in 2016, a team at Brown University decided to study the first-night effect instead of working around it. Masako Tamaki and Yuka Sasaki tracked brain activity across two nights, a week apart, in 35 volunteers.

What they found was that on the first night, one side of the brain stayed in a lighter sleep than the other.

That lighter side was more reactive to unexpected sounds. When researchers played tones that didn’t follow a pattern, sleepers woke faster and more often when the sounds reached the half of the brain that was running lighter.

On the second night, both sides settled to the same depth. The brain had learned the room.

Sasaki compared it to an old Japanese saying: if you change your pillow, you can’t sleep. The explanation is that one side of your brain is keeping a kind of night watch, staying more responsive to new sounds while the rest of you tries to rest.

Your conscious brain knows you’re safe, but your sleeping mind doesn’t

This is where most people recognize themselves. You’re lying in a perfectly nice hotel room. Nothing is wrong. You checked the lock, closed the curtains, adjusted the thermostat. Your conscious brain has filed this room under “fine.”

But your sleeping mind has no history with this place. That little hum isn’t your refrigerator. Those footsteps aren’t your partner going to the bathroom. The mattress moves differently under you, the light comes through the curtains at a different angle.

There’s an elevator somewhere down the hall that groans every twenty minutes, and someone upstairs has apparently decided midnight is the time to rearrange furniture.

At home, your brain has heard all of these sounds a thousand times and learned to file them under “boring.”

In a new room, every one of them is still unclassified, and the part of your brain that’s staying lighter treats each one as something worth checking.

That’s also where the evolutionary explanation fits.

Researchers think this extra vigilance may be an old protective response. In an unfamiliar sleeping spot, staying a little easier to wake could have been useful if something nearby was dangerous.

Sasaki’s team pointed to the parallel with marine mammals and birds, where sleeping with half a brain is a documented survival strategy. Humans are doing a subtler version of the same thing.

We can’t prove that’s exactly why humans do it. But the pattern is consistent with a mind that treats new sleep environments as something to be cautious about, even when the conscious mind has already decided everything is fine.

“But I’ve slept here before” doesn’t completely get you off the hook

This is where it gets more complicated. You’d think that once you’ve slept somewhere before, the brain would add it to some kind of approved list and let you rest.

Familiarity does seem to help. But Anna Wick, a sleep researcher at the University of Fribourg, found first-night effects even when people returned to environments they’d been to before, and even when their lab nights were separated by a week rather than happening back-to-back.

That means the brain’s response isn’t as simple as “new room = bad, old room = fine.” There may be something about any change in sleeping circumstances, even returning to a place you’ve been, that resets at least some of the vigilance.

Disrupted routines, different bedding, the absence of your usual pre-sleep habits, or just the fact that tonight isn’t your normal night at home.

That helps explain why someone can sleep at their parents’ house every Christmas and still spend the first night staring at the ceiling. The room is familiar. The rest of the context isn’t quite the same.

It’s also worth saying that this isn’t universal.

Some people sleep well anywhere. A small number even show a reverse first-night effect and sleep better in a new environment. So this isn’t an explanation for every restless night away from home. It’s one well-documented reason that a perfectly comfortable room can feel impossible to sleep in on night one.

You can’t switch it off, but you can give your brain less to check

There’s no trick that overrides the first-night effect entirely. But the basic strategy is to make the new room feel like less of a departure from your normal night.

Keep your usual bedtime routine. If you read for ten minutes before bed at home, do it at the hotel. Bring whatever familiar cue helps you settle, whether that’s a pillowcase, a white noise app, or a sleep mask.

Make the room as dark and as quiet as you can instead of assuming you’ll adapt.

If sleep matters the next day, before a wedding or a presentation or an early morning flight, arriving a night early gives your brain that adjustment night without the pressure riding on it.

That’s literally what sleep labs do: they let the first night happen so the second one is usable. The elevator barely registers. You fall asleep before you notice you’re falling asleep.

And if you’re lying there at midnight getting frustrated, it helps to know that the frustration itself can become its own problem.

Panicking about not sleeping adds a layer of stress arousal on top of the vigilance your brain is already running.

The goal isn’t to force yourself to sleep normally in a new place. It’s to give the brain fewer new things to keep checking, and let the adjustment happen without fighting it.

That’s the thing to remember the next time you’re lying awake in an otherwise lovely guest room, wondering why you require your exact pillow, your exact blanket, and your exact fan like a toddler. Some of those comforts do help.

But underneath all of that, your brain may simply need a night to learn that this new ceiling, this new hum, and this bed that isn’t yours are boring enough to stop watching.
