If you’ve ever gotten off a Zoom call feeling completely wiped out and thought this exact meeting would not have tired me out this much in person, you’re not imagining it.
Researchers have studied this. A video call takes all the normal social stuff that happens in a room, the eye contact, the facial expressions, the knowing when someone’s done talking, the looking away for a second, and crams it into one little rectangle sitting a foot from your face.
That setup asks more of you than it looks like it should.
The screen puts too many faces too close for too long
Think about a normal conference room. You’re sitting across a table from six coworkers. Some of them are looking at whoever’s talking. One is glancing at the whiteboard. One is looking down at their notes.
Nobody’s face is larger than a playing card from where you’re sitting, and nobody’s staring at you unless they’re speaking directly to you.
Now think about the same meeting on Zoom. Every face is a few inches tall on a screen that’s a foot or two from your eyes. All of them appear to be looking directly at you, all the time, because that’s how a camera works.
In a physical room, that kind of face-to-face proximity is reserved for people you’re close to. On a video call, you’re getting it from your entire team for an hour.
Jeremy Bailenson, the founding director of Stanford’s Virtual Human Interaction Lab, has argued that this creates a kind of nonverbal overload. He compares it to standing in an elevator where everyone has turned to face you and nobody is looking away. In a real elevator, people compensate for the closeness by avoiding eye contact. On Zoom, the opposite happens.
That’s the first reason a video call can be draining before anyone has said anything. The amount of close-up eye contact you’re absorbing in a typical grid view has no equivalent in normal social life.
In-person meetings give you breaks you never think about
In a physical room, your attention moves around without you deciding to move it. You look at the whiteboard. You take a sip of coffee. You notice someone clicking a pen. You glance out the window for half a second.
You shift in your chair and look at the wall while you think about what someone just said.
None of that means you’ve stopped listening. It’s just how attention works when there’s a whole environment around you.
On video, there’s basically one place to look: the rectangle in front of you. Even when you glance away, there’s a low-grade pull to get your eyes back on the call. Partly because the other faces are right there, and partly because you know your camera is on and you don’t want to look distracted.
You can’t lean back and stare at the ceiling while you think.
You can’t stand up and stretch without it becoming a thing.
So instead of your attention naturally spreading around a room, shifting between objects and people and blank space, it keeps getting funneled back into the same rectangle for 45 minutes straight.
The room never changes. The distance never changes. The faces never move to a different spot. In person, your brain gets small, unplanned visual breaks all day long.
On video, it doesn’t get any.

Zoom turns listening into a performance
In a physical meeting, someone can tell you’re paying attention from a dozen ambient signals. Your posture. The fact that you’re facing the speaker. The occasional nod.
You don’t have to work at it because the room does most of the signaling for you.
On video, those ambient cues are weaker or missing entirely, so people compensate. They nod more deliberately. They hold a more attentive expression than they would in person. They stare at the camera so they don’t look like they’ve checked out.
They sit up straighter, hold their face in a tighter frame, and do things with their expression that they’d never do in a conference room because the conference room doesn’t ask them to.
The listening becomes effortful in a way it normally isn’t.
Then there’s the self-view. A small rectangle in the corner of the screen shows you what you look like every second of the call. Part of your attention drifts there whether you want it to or not. Do I look bored? Is my face doing something weird? Should I nod now?
Nobody would hand you a mirror during a meeting and ask you to monitor your own expression while you listen.
But that’s what self-view does, and the default setting keeps it on.
Géraldine Fauville, who led the study at Stanford’s Social Media Lab, surveyed nearly 10,000 participants and identified five mechanisms behind video call exhaustion: mirror anxiety, the sensation of being watched by a grid of faces, feeling physically stuck in front of the camera, and the extra effort required to both produce and interpret nonverbal cues on the other side of the connection.
The format stacks several kinds of cognitive work on top of each other.
And there’s one more layer. Audio on a video call carries a slight delay, usually just a fraction of a second, but enough to interfere with turn-taking.
In person, you read micro-cues for when someone is about to finish a sentence: a shift in tone, a breath, a settling of the hands. On video, those cues are either missing or arrive a beat late. So people either talk over each other or leave uncomfortable pauses.
Both outcomes add cognitive effort to a process that normally runs on autopilot.
Video calls aren’t always the problem
A quick one-on-one can be easier than commuting across town for a fifteen-minute check-in.
Some people barely notice self-view. Some meetings are short enough and loose enough that none of this stacks up. And for teams spread across time zones, video is often the only way to get the kind of connection that used to require a plane ticket.
The technology isn’t the problem. The default way we use it is.
The fatigue tends to show up when calls are long, when cameras are expected the entire time, and when there aren’t many breaks between them. Research from Microsoft’s Human Factors Lab found that back-to-back video meetings cause stress to accumulate in the brain with each successive call, but that even a ten-minute break between meetings was enough to let it reset.
The brain that walks down a hallway between conference rooms gets something the brain that clicks from one call to the next never does: a chance to stop performing before the next performance starts.
That’s why shutting the laptop after an hour-long Zoom hits so differently from walking out of a conference room after the same meeting with the same people about the same thing. In the conference room, your eyes wandered. Your body shifted. Your attention had somewhere else to go for a second.
On video, the meeting followed you around inside one rectangle and asked you to keep performing the whole time.
No wonder closing it feels like relief.
