Bride-To-Be Pans $3,000 Engagement Ring, Calling It ‘Cheap Trash’

A disappointed man took to Reddit this week to share his fiancee’s horrific response to the engagement ring he presented her with when proposing. The ring, which was made of white gold and cost $3,000, was understated but beautiful and while the woman initially appreciated it, that all changed when she showed it to her mother, who’s a jeweler. Since then, she’s panned the jewelry as “cheap trash” and has demanded he shell out for a more expensive ring.

  1. The man could have afforded a more expensive ring. OP revealed that while he could have spent the traditional 10% of his yearly earnings — about $10,000 – $15,000 — on a more expensive ring, his money situation was a little different this year as he was helping to financially support family members throughout the COVID crisis. “My sister has lost her job so I’m still supporting her a bit and my job has announced that they will be laying off around 150 people next year and while I feel confident that I’m not one of them, I don’t want to guarantee it either,” he revealed.
  2. His fiancee loved the ring at first. He said that when he first presented the woman with the ring, a “nice little white gold ring with diamonds and a sapphire,” she was happy with it. However, once her mom saw it, she changed her tune and has since accused him of “undervaluing her” and “treating her like cheap trash.” Uh, what?! Since then, she’s refused to talk to him and demanded a better ring.
  3. The guy feels terrible. Despite the fact that he’s proposed to the woman and wants to spend the rest of his life with her, he admits that he “feels like s**t” because of the way she and her family have been treating him, especially since her parents are accusing him of “using her” and the fact that no one will listen to his point of view.
  4. Of course, everyone can see the red flags here. The fact that the woman is so obsessed with how much the ring costs rather than the fact that this guy wants to marry her is a serious problem. If money is all that matters to her, what will happen if one day he loses his job and can’t provide? Plus, an obsession with money more than anything else shows that SHE might be the one using HIM.
  5. Hopefully this whole wedding gets called off. It’s clear these two should NOT be getting married and this guy can do much better with a woman who will love him for the gesture rather than for how much that gesture cost.
