A Christian dad has been forced to apologize after releasing a song directed towards young girls called “Modest Is Hottest.” Matthew West directed the track specifically at his own teenage daughters and not only is the terrible attempt at humor misguided but also extremely damaging. In fact, many are slamming the track for promoting “purity culture.”

- The lyrics to “Modest Is Hottest” are pretty nuts. They include such gems as: “Now I have been trying hard to raise you up right/ No drinkin’, no smokin’, no swearin’/ But your old man has got a little more advice / When it comes to the clothes that your wearing… The latest fashion trend is a little more Amish/ A little less Kardashian. What the boys really love is a turtleneck and a sensible pair of slacks/ Honey, Modest Is Hottest/ Sincerely, your Dad.” Wow.
- But wait, that’s not all. The song also threatened his teenagers if he ever caught them wearing crop tops on TikTok, claiming that West would make sure they were “grounded ’til the world stops.” Yes, really. West can try to play it off as “humor” all he wants, but given his conservative Christian beliefs, it’s clear that’s not the case.
- Needless to say, not everyone was a fan of the song. In fact, a lot of people were downright disgusted. As one commenter wrote: “This modest is hottest ideal teaches women and ESPECIALLY young girls that their bodies are sexual and they are objects. And it also teaches that YOU have to dress for the men not yourself because you are nothing but a barbie to them. And the fact that it’s mostly men and fathers who tell this to their young daughters is disgusting.” Another person added: “I can’t wait for your next video addressed to young men about how they can control themselves around young women, regardless of how they are dressed.”
- Because of the backlash, West eventually deleted the song and issued an apology. Writing on his Twitter account, he posted: “I’m blessed to be the father of two amazing girls. I wrote a song poking fun at myself for being an over-protective dad and my family thought it was funny. The song was created as satire, and I realize that some people did not receive it as intended. I’ve taken the feedback to heart. The last thing I want is to distract from the real reason I make music-: to spread a message of hope and love to the world.” Sure thing, dude.
