The most romantic boyfriend ever has proposed to his girlfriend under Comet Neowise, a beautiful display only visible from Earth every 6,800 years. John Nicotera, 33, asked his girlfriend, 26-year-old Erica Pendrak, to be his wife in full view of the beautiful sight, and needless to say, it’s a proposal that will go down in history.

- The couple met on Instagram. They’ve been living together for about 18 months now and while John had been considering proposing for awhile, he wanted to see how they got on together during quarantine. After all, nothing will test a relationship more than spending 24/7 locked up in a house together, right?
- Lockdown only strengthened their love. “Being stuck at home every hour can take a toll on a person, and we had not a single issue,” John told Insider. “I feel like the honeymoon phase of the relationship might’ve faded away and that was a big test. We both figured out how to deal with each other’s problems, you know?”
- The stars aligned for the proposal. The comet was only going to be visible from July 15 to July 23, so John knew he had to act quickly. He took Erica to Old Forge, New York to get a glimpse of the beautiful sight. Then he took the evening to a whole new level by proposing to her. How romantic is that?!
- John is a self-described “space junkie.” He originally considered proposing to Erica at Crater Lake in Oregon, but given the rarity of Comet Neowise, it was an easy choice to head to New York instead. “This could be our engagement. This is not going to happen in our lifetime or five generations’ lifetimes,” he explained to CNN.
- The proposal couldn’t have gone better. Of course Erica burst into tears and accepted the proposal, but John also had his photographer friend Tim Leach on hand to capture some incredibly beautiful photos of the occasion. “I just remember the amount of happiness I had going through me,” John recalled. “All the nerves were gone at that point. I was just like, I’m massively in love with this girl. I’m going to do it.”
