Most people include “a sense of humor” on the list of qualities they want in a significant other, but that’s a pretty general requirement. Some people are sarcastic, some like dark humor, and others can’t get enough of practical jokes. We can all probably say we have a sense of humor, so it’s actually pretty vague to say that’s what you’re looking for in a mate. What you want is someone who can make you laugh — someone who gets your specific sense of humor and can relate to it. Everyone has a sense of humor, but what you really want is the right sense of humor.
- Who doesn’t love to laugh? Judging by all the people who say in their online dating profiles that “laughing” is one of their biggest hobbies, it’s pretty much a given that someone who can make you laugh is going to make an impression. Especially if he can inspire one of those uncontrollable laughing fits where your sides hurt and your eyes start watering. Those are the best.
- He can make anything fun. If you’ve been together awhile, a lot of your dates are going to be pretty low key. He’d even watch The Bachelor with you and having you cracking up over his commentary. It doesn’t matter what you’re doing, because he has a way of making sure you always have a good time.
- He doesn’t take himself too seriously. Everyone gets stressed out sometimes, but in general, the funny guy can look on the bright side of things and not dwell too much on his own importance. He can make fun of himself, and he can take a little good-natured teasing from you too.
- Other people probably like him too. Unless you have a bizarre sense of humor that no one else really gets, chances are if he can make you laugh, he can also make other people laugh. Since everyone likes to laugh, he’ll probably make a great impression on your friends, and make the whole meeting your family thing a lot less awkward.
- Funny won’t fade. Looks aren’t going to last forever, and as we all know, good looks definitely don’t always come with a good personality. A guy who’s funny has never been able to rely on his looks, so he uses humor as his source of confidence. And it doesn’t matter how old he gets, he’ll always be funny.
- A sense of humor is a sign of intelligence. Certain types of humor like wit and sarcasm could indicate that a guy is also pretty smart. If he can joke about current events, he’s probably pretty observant too. That means he pays attention, which is never a bad thing.
- You can’t stay mad at him. Even when you’re in the middle of a huge throw down fight, he still has the ability to crack and joke and make you smile. All couples fight about ridiculous things sometimes, so it’s nice when one of you can point out how silly you’re both being by making a joke about it.
- He’ll teach you to let loose. Why so serious all the time? Life doesn’t have to be all about work, work, work. Even when you’re obsessing over a work problem, he’ll be able to get your mind off it and show you that sometimes you just need to take a break and relax a little bit.
- Inside jokes bring you closer. You know those jokes that only you guys get? The ones that make you two laugh hysterically while everyone else stares at you like you’ve lost your minds? If you have a lot of inside jokes, your friends might start to get irritated, but oh well, at least you’ll still have each other.
- He isn’t afraid to look silly. If he’s never afraid to be his weird self, then you won’t be either. We all have our quirks, and you’re not going to be able to hide them from the person you’re dating forever. If he’s not afraid to act goofy sometimes, it means he’s comfortable with who he is, and confidence is always sexy.
