A ‘Dirty Dancing’ Sequel Is Officially In The Works

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 33 years since Dirty Dancing was released. The 1987 movie starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey immediately became iconic and continues to be beloved by fans new and old even in 2020. If you’re a fan, you’ll be thrilled to know that a Dirty Dancing sequel is officially happening and Grey is returning to reprise her role as Baby.

  1. It’s “one of the worst kept secrets in Hollywood.” Apparently everyone but me knew that a Dirty Dancing sequel was happening, at least according to Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer. “It will be exactly the kind of romantic, nostalgic movie that the franchise’s fans have been waiting for and that have made it the biggest-selling library title in the Company’s history,” he told Deadline.
  2. Jennifer Grey will do more than just star in the sequel. Not only will her return to Dirty Dancing bring Baby back to life, but Grey will also serve as executive producer on the project, which is pretty awesome. It’s such a shame Swayze isn’t still alive to take part, as it would have been wonderful to see them reunited on screen.
  3. We don’t know much else about the movie thus far. All that’s been reported is that Warm Bodies director Jonathan Levine and Gillian Bohrer will serve as directors. No further information is available in terms of actors or plot, which means we’ll just have to wait and see.
  4. Dirty Dancing was ripe for a sequel. Consider this: when it was released back in 1987, it only cost $5 million to make, which is peanuts in Hollywood. However, worldwide, it grossed a whopping $218 million, which is a major payoff. Is it any wonder that they’re keen to put together a sequel, especially now when the nostalgia factor is so high? I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see this.
