While it may not be commonplace for puppies and pigeons to hang out, but you’d be hard-pressed to pull Little Lundy, a disabled chihuahua, and Herman, a flightless pigeon, apart. Sue Rogers, the founder of the Rochester-based nonprofit animal rescue group the Mia Foundation, said that the two animals immediately became attached at the hip when she introduced them, creating the most adorable friendship ever.
- They’ve gone viral for good reason. Rogers recently shared the above photo online and it wasn’t long before people started to respond with enthusiasm. “Unbelievable that a simple, cute picture would go this crazy,” Rogers said. “Thursday night I took Herman out of his playpen to give him some time out and I put him in a dog bed and then I had to tend to Lundy so I put Lundy in with him. They just looked really cute together so I took some pictures and posted them to Facebook and the next morning it was crazy.”
- Because of it, the Mia Foundation has been receiving loads of donations. While viral news doesn’t always have such a positive slant, the amazing part of Herman and Lundy’s story getting big is that the nonprofit organization has raised thousands in donations, Rogers told WHEC-10. This money will go towards helping other animals in need, which is such a great cause. “I think the world needs good stories and when you have two species that basically fall in love, it can only touch hearts,” she said.
- Lundy even got a custom wheelchair out of the deal! At the end of February, Amherst, New Hampshire charity Walkin’ Pets, which specializes in animal mobility, contacted the Mia Foundation with an offer to provide a custom wheelchair for Lundy, who’s so small that he’s only two pounds. Soon after, it arrived. “It was great to know there was something I could do to help this adorable little animal whose story was everywhere,” Jennifer Pratt of Walkin’ Pets told WMUR-TV.
