Disney Confirms ‘The Lion King’ Live-Action Sequel Is Coming

I grew up watching Disney’s animated version of The Lion King, but I was thrilled to learn they were making a live-action one (and better yet, thrilled to know that Beyonce was involved). The movie did so well that fans were hoping for a follow-up and now they’re getting their wish. In fact, Disney confirmed a live-action Lion King sequel is officially coming.

  1. It will follow on from the first movie. Not only will the Lion King sequel continue on from where we left off in the 2019 version, but we’ll also get to look deeper into Mufasa’s story as well to see how it ties into who Simba is today and how he ruled the kingdom.
  2. Berry Jenkins will be directing. If you’re not familiar with Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins, you need to go and watch Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk, or any other of his incredible movies. Disney’s decision to bring him on board the live-action Lion King sequel is definitely a smart one. Jeff Nathanson will also be back as screenwriter.
  3. No really, this is going to be so good. As reported by Deadline, the technology this movie will use is unparalleled and hyperrealistic. Combining that tech with Jenkins’ expertise is a winner. “Helping my sister raise two young boys during the ’90s, I grew up with these characters,” Jenkins said in a statement. “Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true.”
  4. What else do we have to look forward to? Apparently the Lion King sequel will move things “forward while looking back conjures memories of The Godfather: Part II, set on the African plain with a continuation of the tradition of music that was a key part of the 1994 animated classic, the 2019 film and the blockbuster Broadway stage transfer.” That sounds intense and amazing and I can’t wait.
