A DJ hired to play music at a 2017 Texas senior prom is getting major flack five years later due to one of his song choices. A TikTok clip uploaded by Celeste Orozco has racked up millions of views for capturing the DJ playing Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” for the prom king and queen. Sound offensive yet? Just you wait.

  1. The opening lines of the Sheeran song are the problem. “When your legs don’t work like they used to before,” he sings. The issue here is that the prom queen, Sarah Mendenhall, is a wheelchair user. Oops?
  2. How cringe-worthy is this? The fact that the DJ either didn’t know the song well enough or was just totally careless enough to play a song like this for someone with a disability had TikTok users cringing hard. “This would haunt me for the rest of my life if I were the DJ,” one person commented.
  3. A few people joked about the mishap. One person claimed that “the DJ knew exactly what he was doing,” while another joked that the “DJ was slipped a $20 to play that by the girl who came in second place.” Another person added: “Personally would’ve walked out.”
  4. Thankfully, Mendenhall herself wasn’t offended. She came into the comments section to let everyone know she was okay. “Hey everyone so this is me lol. I found it really funny and ironic. I didn’t know what was playing until way after cause I was tryna ✨dance✨,” she wrote. Orozco, who’s Mendenhall’s best friend, added: “Had a great prom night and a good laugh about it the next day.” Doesn’t make it any better on the DJ’s part, but at least Mendenhall has a great sense of humor and wasn’t too offended by the careless choice. Seems like they had an awesome prom!
