Jumping into a relationship this time of year may seem super overwhelming. The holidays are coming, which means tons of family time and a billion and one events are about to kick off. While there are valid reasons to avoid defining your relationship, the holiday season doesn’t need to be one of them. Here are 10 reason to not put the talk off and have the conversation if you’re ready for a relationship:

  1. Putting it off is anxiety-inducing. Do you really need months to secretly wonder where the relationship is going? Keeping your wishes or concerns to yourself will just make you anxious or grumpy. If there’s something on your mind, the time of the year shouldn’t prevent you from getting it off your chest.
  2. You don’t have to meet each other’s families. Committing to each other doesn’t mean you have to jump head-first into super serious relationship activities. If you’re not ready to meet the family or introduce him to yours, then just don’t. It won’t kill them to wait until you’re comfortable.
  3. No one will think you’re in it for the presents. No one will think you’re such a monster of a person that you got in a relationship just to receive some gifts. And if anyone does think this, screw them. That logic doesn’t even make sense, since you’ll be buying gifts, as well. If anything, you’d be breaking even.
  4. You could be missing out on some serious romance. Kisses in the snow? Romantic nights in with wine by the fire? New Year’s Eve magic at midnight? You might not want to take passing all of this up so lightly.
  5. Decorating is a two person job. Are you seriously going to cut down a tree and tie it to the roof of your car by yourself? Power to you if you are, but I know you aren’t stringing tinsel and garlands all over the place without some help. Boyfriends are great for holding the ladder while you hang lights around your porch, tossing you on his shoulders while you place a star on top of your tree, and refilling your spiked eggnog glass multiple times after you’ve realized you’re in way over your head/have gotten super bored.
  6. You seriously don’t want to go to your holiday office party alone. Sure, you could be the girl that goes stag, gets trapped in a conversation with the office weirdo, has no one to introduce to your coworkers as a sneaky cover for the fact that you’ve forgotten all their names, and attempts to stay sober enough to not accidentally crap talk your boss to the wrong person. But why would you want to do that?
  7. If you want the label, go for it. Why should anything get in the way of what you want? If you don’t act like it’s important to you, he might not have any idea it is. If he’s something you want, take a chance and go for it, regardless of what month it is.
  8. Don’t fear rejection just because it’s the holidays. Sure, you’re taking a risk that the conversation might go poorly and you’ll end up being 100% single for the holidays, but being single isn’t a bad thing and it comes with its own benefits this time of year, too. There are plenty of ways to rock the holidays as a single person, and a fear of being alone should never influence your actions.
  9. You’ll have to wait until mid-February. You’re essentially committing to putting this off until Valentine’s Day is over… like, three months from now. That’s a whole quarter of a year. And spending a quarter of a year in relationship limbo sounds a lot more like a punishment than a way of keeping it simple and easy.
  10. ‘Tis the season for cuddles. It’s cold outside and the sun is going down at, like, noon. Winter is the perfect time to fall into a couple’s coma and hibernate until spring with pizza, candles, fuzzy blankets, and Netflix. The thing about a couple’s coma is: you kinda need to be part of a couple to have one, so it might be time to speak up.
