A Brazilian model who was fighting in Ukraine has sadly been killed in a Russian missile strike, it has been reported. Thalita do Valle was working as an elite sniper in the city of Kharkiv when she lost her life in an attack by Russian forces on June 30. Her friend and fellow Brazilian soldier, 40-year-old Douglas Burigo, was also killed after going into a bunker to find her.

- Thalita’s brother Theo praised his sister as a hero. He commended the 39-year-old woman’s bravery for risking her own life in order to save others and pointed out that she’d only been in Ukraine for three weeks when she was killed. According to Theo, Thalita was trying to rescue people while working as a sharpshooter to give cover from Russian forces.
- She’d had several near misses previously. Before going to Kharkiv, Thalita had been in the capital city of Kyiv where she reportedly survived a bomb attack. She had very little contact with her family at the time, only managing to get in touch on a few occasions to let them know she was safe.
- Thalita’s family spoke to her one last time when she arrived in Kharkiv. However, because it was so dangerous to make calls and service was patchy at best, she never spoke to them again after arriving there.
- Her military service goes back many years. Thalita previously fought ISIS in Iraq, an experience that she documented on her YouTube channel. She’s said to have fought alongside the Peshmergas, armed military forces in the Kurdistan region, which is where she honed her incredible sniping skills.
