A Florida dad died saving two of his four children who were being electrocuted by currents in a shopping center fountain. The family was at Harbourside Place in Jupiter on Sunday, October 22 when two of his kids decided to play in the splash pad. However, the kids soon began screaming as they were hit by electric currents in the water, WPBF reported. That’s when dad Nate Davenport sprung into action, sadly losing his life as he saved those of his kids.

Nate Davenport didn’t hesitate before jumping in to save them

He quickly reached into the water to pull out his 8- and 11-year-old sons so they would stop being electrocuted by the currents. However, in doing so, he ended up being fatally electrocuted himself.

“The kids started screaming, ‘We’re getting shocked, we’re getting shocked, and so he rushed into save them,” Davenport’s mother Mary told WPBF.

While his two sons and another child experienced injuries along with Davenport and another unnamed adult, Davenport’s injuries were far more severe.

He lost consciousness and never woke up

Everyone involved in the electrocution was taken to Jupiter Medical Center, but sadly, Davenport never regained consciousness. Instead, his wife, Amy, and their four children only had enough time to say goodbye before he passed away.

“He took a hit for his kids. We had 45 years with him. God blessed us with him,” Mary said. “He’s an amazing man.”

It’s unclear what led to the fatal electrocution, and it’s believed an investigation into the tragic event is ongoing.

Harbourside Place says the fountains aren’t to be used as splash pads

A spokesperson for the center said that the kids weren’t in splash pads at the time of the injuries, but that they were in the fountain, which is reportedly plastered with “no climbing” and “no swimming” signs.

There is indeed a splash pad in the area, but it’s separated from the fountain by a small wall.

Mary Davenport says the local community has been a great comfort in such a trying time, with many reaching out to the family business where Nate worked with his parents to show their support.

“We have been getting so many calls and emails. From clients, from friends, from other contractors, from subcontractors who have just poured their heart out to me to say how much Nate meant to them and how he impacted their life. And so that is the blessing to us,” she said.
