Florida Woman Arrested For Attacking Roommate For Loudly Playing Chic’s ‘Le Freak’ On Repeat Pinellas County Jail

A Florida woman was arrested and charged with misdemeanor domestic battery after she attacked her roommate for repeatedly playing Chic’s 1978 hit single “Le Freak” loudly on repeat. According to an arrest affidavit obtained by The Smoking Gun, Mary Ann Lannon, 53, “became upset” by the repeated playing of the song and freaked out (pun intended) on the 64-year-old roommate, who was understood to be her cousin.

  1. The outburst of violence was intense. The arrest report reveals that Lannon pushed her cousin into a “makeshift tiki bar, causing the bar to fall apart and the victim to strike her left eye on a speaker.” Police reported that the victim was seen to be suffering “severe swelling and bruising to the left eye” when they arrived on the scene.
  2. The victim had been playing the track “over and over again very loudly.” The altercation took place at roughly 12:15 a.m. on March 3, after Lannon became aggravated with the loud, repeated music at such a late hour.
  3. Lannon was arrested on the scene. Police took Lannon into custody after cuffing her at the Tampa Bay apartment and charged her at Pinellas County Jail with misdemeanor domestic battery. She was released later that same day on her own recognizance and was ordered to have no contact with her cousin, with whom she’s believed to have shared the apartment for about five years. It remains unclear when she will next appear in court.
  4. To be fair, Chic’s ‘Le Freak’ is a pretty great song. The song, written by Chic members Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards, topped the Billboard Top 100 following its release and was even judged one of the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress’ “aural treasures worthy of preservation” in 2018. In other words, it’s pretty universally loved. Too bad Mary Ann Lannon didn’t agree!
