If you’re a person of a certain age, you’ll remember all too well how prevalent the duck face was in selfies. Pursing your lips to the extreme while trying to capture the perfect pic. Of course, Gen Z wants nothing to do with these old-fashioned trends, so they’ve replaced the duck face with their own take: the scrunch face. Yes, seriously.

The scrunch face is all the rage right now.

Talking on TikTok, @Starberrymilkmob pointed out just how prevalent the scrunch face has become for Gen Z, and it really seems to be having its moment.

“You know how we always go through the phases of the faces every girl makes? This is what it is right now,” she says in a clip before squinting her eyes and scrunching up her nose in an effort to look super adorable.

Her video has more than a million views, which makes sense since influencers are pretty sure the scrunch face is going to take over the (social media) world.

So many people agree that this is literally everywhere right now.

“YOURE SO RIGHT OMG,” one person commented on the clip.

Another added, “It literally is.”

A third pointed out that Gen Z seems so fond of the scrunch face because “it’s the ‘i’m having so much fun’ pose.”

Others admitted that they do this face themselves but had no idea that it was a Thing that had become popular. “I didn’t even realize I was buying into a trend,” one person said.

There might be a reason the scrunch face has taken over Gen Z.

As TikTok beauty influencer Abby Roberts explained, it’s all about where people first start doing these faces that determines whether or not they take off.

On TikTok, everyone loves facial expressions for some reason, because it’s quite a young audience and you have to really be emotive and have it go with the music and stuff,” she told Vox. “So everyone does all these crazy faces; like, sticking their tongue out is a big thing as well. I guess it’s just translated into photos.”

It could also be down to the fact that scrunching your face makes you look cute, at least in theory.

“There’s this hyperfixation on being a cute little baby,” 26-year-old Brittany Tomlinson told Vox.

I wonder what the next trend will be?
