Getting Yourself Off Could Have A Positive Effect On Your Immune System, So You Know What To Do

There’s nothing wrong with a little masturbation from time to time. Not only can it help relieve stress and pent-up sexual frustration, but according to one study from the Department of Medical Psychology at the University Clinic of Essen in Germany, getting yourself off can also help boost your immune system to keep you healthy. Who knew?

  1. Self-pleasuring increases white blood cell production. The German study looked at the effects of orgasm via masturbation in 11 participants to see how it affected their white blood cell count and overall immune system performance, if at all. What they found is that sexual arousal and orgasm had a really positive effect on the body’s white blood cell count in the 45 minutes post-orgasm.
  2. In other words, getting yourself off can boost your immune system. White blood cells help fight infection in your body, so the more of them you have, the better your immune system can work at keeping out invaders and keeping you healthy. While there’s no guarantee that you’ll become some sort of walking superhero immune to all illness, the positive effect seen here shouldn’t be ignored.
  3. Masturbation helps create “the right environment” for good health. As Dr. Jennifer Landa, a specialist in hormone therapy, told Men’s Health, “Masturbation can produce the right environment for a strengthened immune system.” This is largely because ejaculation increases cortisol production which regulates immune response in the body. Fascinating!
  4. No word on whether this works for women as well. While one would assume that getting yourself off would be just as beneficial for women as it is for men, the small German study (which was in itself limited) did not take women into account, so there’s no scientific proof that female immunity is boosted by self-pleasuring. However, given all the other positive psychological effects it has, I would say it’s still worth giving it a go.
