Gigi Hadid has revealed that she was barely a teenager when Joe Jonas, five years her senior, hit on her. They did indeed date briefly back in 2015, but they’d met a long time prior. In fact, the model says that she was only 13 when an 18-year-old Jonas asked her out. Whether because she wasn’t interested or because her parents wouldn’t allow it, she said no.
Back in 2015, Hadid recalled her first run-in with the “Sucker” singer, saying they were both attending an awards show when they met.
“We met at the Grammys, like when I was 13 years old, and he asked me to a baseball game and I said no,” she told The Hollywood Reporter at the time. “It was literally because I was like so nervous I didn’t even know what it meant to hang out with a boy. Also, I think Grammys are on a Sunday and I didn’t want to tell him I had school the next day.”
Gigi Hadid and Joe Jonas did actually date for a while when Hadid was 20, but they couldn’t really make things work long-term. However, she did direct his “Cake By The Ocean” video while they were together, so that’s something. As you probably know, Hadid and Zayn Malik later got together and had a child together, so she did clearly develop a taste for boy bands!
However, can we just talk about how gross it is that an 18-year-old would be romantically interested in a 13-year-old girl. I’m well aware that Jonas will barely have been an adult himself, but there’s a huge mental, social, physical, and emotional gap between those ages, so the fact that he thought it was a good idea to hit on a literal child is weird and nasty. What would they possibly have in common besides being rich and famous? How did he ever think this was appropriate?
