Given the global health crisis we’re currently fighting, everything about our daily lives is affected, from work to grocery shopping to the TV we watch. Speaking of the latter, production has all but stopped on Hollywood movies and shows. The upside of this? The Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 finale is coming four weeks early!
We are disappointed that we don’t get to complete our storytelling this season. The good news? 1621 plays like a satisfying finale! It’s not where we planned to end, but it’s beautiful & the questions that linger we will answer next year. #GreysAnatomy #StayHome pic.twitter.com/BsHV9vJUiJ

- Admittedly, that is four fewer episodes than we would have liked. Grey’s took a hiatus in early March 2020 when the health crisis was just kicking off. It was thought that they might be able to return after a few weeks’ break when there was more clarity on the situation, but because of the current pandemic, they’re not coming back this year and the finale has to be moved forward. While there were originally supposed to be 25 episodes, we’re going to end up with 21, which is still pretty decent, to be fair.
- The season finale of Grey’s Anatomy was due to air mid-May. According to Collider, the March 26 episode, “Love of My Life,” was actually #19 of the season. After ABC confirmed the early ending, it was revealed that Grey’s Anatomy will use #21, “Put On a Happy Face,” as its season finale.
- Thankfully, the show will be back for Season 17. The season finale of Grey’s Anatomy won’t be the last we see of our favorite doctors, of course. ABC renewed the show for Season 17 a while back, thank goodness. It was expected that production on new episodes would start somewhere around mid-July, but all of that remains up in the air at the moment.
- This isn’t the only show that will probably end early. Grey’s Anatomy isn’t in a unique position here. As The Hollywood Reporter explains, many TV shows are in the same position, forced to end their seasons early and air finales weeks before they were due (and perhaps with strange cliffhangers which were never meant to be). We’ll get through this, however. There are always plenty of reruns to catch up on!
