Ellen Pompeo has admitted that Season 17 could be the end of the road for Grey’s Anatomy as the show’s future is not set in stone. The actress, who plays Dr. Meredith Grey in the long-running medical drama, said in an interview with Variety that she’s not contracted beyond a 17th season and that anything could happen.
- To be fair, 17 seasons is a pretty good run. “We don’t know when the show is really ending yet. But the truth is, this year could be it,” Pompeo said. While fans would be disappointed to say goodbye to the cast they’ve come to know and love over the years, no one could say that they didn’t have a pretty solid run.
- As a producer, Pompeo plays a big part in the show’s direction. “I’m constantly fighting for the show as a whole to be as good as it can be. As a producer, I feel like I have permission to be able to do that. I mean, this is the last year of my contract right now. I don’t know that this is the last year, but it could very well could be,” she said.
- What happens with Grey’s depends on a lot of things. Obviously viewing figures matter, and while Grey’s isn’t as popular as it once was, it’s safe to say it’s still one of ABC’s top series. Because of this, budget for the series should never be an issue. However, it also depends on how the showrunners feel in re: how many stories are left to tell and whether or not the cast wants to continue. Who can say what will happen?
- Of course, Season 17 hasn’t even started yet. Production on Season 16 was delayed due to coronavirus and Season 17 won’t begin airing for a while yet. However, just hearing that it could be the end for Grey’s Anatomy is filling me with anxiety. Don’t take it away from me! I’m not ready!
