Hairdresser Helps Women Embrace Gray Hair Instead Of Covering It And They Look Incredible

A few years ago, a woman walked into Jack Martin’s salon in Tustin, California and told the colorist that she was sick of dyeing her hair. She’d been doing it to cover grays at least once a month for as long as she could remember and she was getting tired of it. She had other priorities in life and maintaining her hair wasn’t one of them. That appointment sparked a passion in Martin to help women embrace their gray hair, and his transformations have been incredible.

  1. It takes so much less upkeep. Unlike having to regularly bleach your roots or cover-up your “real” color with dyes every four to six weeks, Martin says that women who embrace their gray hair only have to come in every few months. “My clients with natural gray hair come two or three times a year, instead of every few weeks,” he told Allure.
  2. The transformation takes a long time. Martin tends to take his clients’ hair from drab to fab in a single 10-hour session. First, he uses a color extractor to remove any artificial dye left behind. Then he bleaches the rest of the head, leaving the gray roots as-is, to prep the hair for the full silver color. The end result is a beautiful head of gray hair that anyone would embrace.
  3. He works with women’s natural hair color. Not all shades of gray and silver are the same and Martin appreciates this, which is why he bases the new color he chooses on each woman’s natural gray pattern. This is made easier to study when women come in with a few inches of natural gray root growth.”Some clients have salt and pepper mostly in the front, and the back is darker, so I match that and add some dark to it,” he explained.
  4. With hair like this, who cares about covering grays? The idea that gray hair is somehow “old” or not beautiful is ridiculous, and Jack Martin is making more and more women understand that. I’m tempted to make an appointment with him in a few years myself!
