‘Hamilton’ With The Original Broadway Cast Will Be In Movie Theaters Next Year

Hamilton has taken the theater world by storm over the past few years, and with good reason. Lin Manuel Miranda’s take on the story of Alexander Hamilton is innovative, fresh, and incredibly addictive to listen to, song-wise. While it hasn’t been possible for many people to make it to New York City to see the show in person on Broadway, you can now rest easy because the Hamilton movie is coming in 2021.

  1. The Hamilton movie stars the original cast. Lin Manuel Miranda and other original cast members including Leslie Odom Jr. and Phillipa Soo departed Hamilton on Broadway several years ago, and while the talented actors and singers who have replaced them over the years are still incredibly talented, there’s something special about knowing that the version hitting movie theaters next year will include the original cast members.
  2. It was recorded live in New York. According to a tweet from Miranda himself, the Hamilton movie, which will be released by Disney, was filmed live at the Richard Rogers Theater in New York. While no specific date was given as to when the show was filmed, Mashable reports that it was a show in June 2016, just before the cast departures.
  3. Now we can watch Hamilton over and over again. Even if you did get to New York to see Hamilton, chances are you’d be happy to see it again… and again. Once the movie comes out, you’ll be able to do exactly that. “Lin-Manuel Miranda created an unforgettable theater experience and a true cultural phenomenon, and it was for good reason that Hamilton was hailed as an astonishing work of art. All who saw it with the original cast will never forget that singular experience,” said Disney C.E.O. Robert Iger in a press release. “And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to share this same Broadway experience with millions of people around the world.”
  4. We still have a long wait ahead of us. While hearing that the Hamilton movie is imminent is fantastic news, what’s not so fantastic is knowing that it’s not actually coming to theaters until October 15, 2021. That’s more than 18 months away, which feels like way too long. I guess we’ll have to settle for streaming the soundtrack on Spotify in the meantime.
