How To Tell If A Guy Would Make A Good Husband

If you want to get married at some point, you may be trying to figure out if your significant other is truly “The One.” Couples go through rough patches and relationships evolve and grow over time, but you want to be with someone who will always try to meet you halfway. With that in mind, here are nine signs that he’s got what it takes to be a good husband.

  1. He always factors you in. Whether it’s a weekend plan with his family or a quick trip to the grocery store, he’s always thinking of you and your schedule. The best husbands understand the importance of teamwork and realize that with good relationships, you’re supposed to work together, not apart. Before booking plans, he’ll always make sure to ask you first. Or, he’ll invite you if it’s something he thinks you’d be interested in. His calendar is open and he’d never hide anything from you.
  2. He always makes you laugh. Even if it’s the same go-to joke, he always knows how to get a smile on your face. Very often, he tries to use humor to tone down a tense situation. While it’s hard to have a conversation with a complete jokester, this guy may toss in a funny observation just to lighten the mood before getting serious. Life can be pretty wild and unpredictable at times, so it’s important to have a husband who makes it fun.
  3. He knows how to clean. Or at the very least, he knows the basics of keeping a place tidy. You want to marry someone who knows how to take responsibility for their own messes. They may not be perfect, but they put in the effort from an early start and don’t fall back on archaic gender roles. In knowing how to clean and take care of himself, he’s showing you he respects both you and himself.
  4. You agree on a lot of key issues. When you marry someone, you need to make sure certain thoughts align. Politically, you should match up or you’ll be faced with a lot of disagreements down the road, especially if one of you tries to persuade the other to their side. You should also agree on kids. It’s okay if you both don’t want any, but you need to be on the same page. Otherwise, neither of you will be happy. While compromise is the best approach, that’s simply impossible when it comes to having children.
  5. He isn’t quick to lose his patience.  Every couple fights and every couple approaches disagreements differently. If your guy quickly loses his temper – or worse, he actually gets violent — that’s a huge red flag and reason to leave. You need to be with a guy who has patience, doesn’t jump to conclusions, and doesn’t need to punch a wall to release his frustration. When a guy has a bad temper, it’ll always put you on edge. Find someone who is more calm and willing to talk things out.
  6. He appreciates family. Not everyone grows up in a stable household. It’s very common to find a partner who may be estranged from his parents or siblings for a personal reason. However, a good husband will still appreciate the concept of family. He will appreciate that it’s important to connect in some way, and won’t make you feel bad about your phone calls with mom. If it means something to you, it should mean something to him.
  7. He’s good in an emergency. Some guys can think well under pressure, and that’s the type of guy it’s great to be linked to. It’s good to have someone whose brain works slightly different from your own. You’ll benefit from a husband who’ll make smart, logical choices in the moment. It’s also good that he won’t panic or worry when it comes to smaller issues, such as a flat tire or a forgotten bill.
  8. He doesn’t talk down to you. He shouldn’t think of you differently just because your career may not be as prestigious. Or, if you’re not at a rank you want to be right now. The right partner will cheer you on and encourage you to be your best self, but won’t criticize you along the way. If you want to take additional classes or learn a new skill, a guy who’s husband-material will psych you up for it. Sentences like “I don’t think that’s a good fit for you,” or “Do you really think you qualify for that promotion?” will never leave his mouth.
  9. You actually like spending time with him. Regardless of looks, money, or where they’re currently at in life, you’ll want to marry someone you like spending time with. A good husband doesn’t drag down experiences — instead, he makes them more fun. Be with someone who makes experiences better, not more chaotic. If your husband isn’t someone you consider to be a friend, maybe he’s not your best match.
