The ‘Hunger Games’ Prequel Movie Is Officially Happening And It Sounds Incredible Lionsgate

I was a massive fan of The Hunger Games when it came out and loved both the books and the movies. The world-building Suzanne Collins did with the series was amazing and it’s one of the best YA fantasy series of the past few decades, I’d say. That’s why it’s so exciting to know that a Hunger Games prequel is officially in the works!

  1. Collins is just about to release The Ballad of Songbirds and Snake. Her newest novel, due to hit shelves on May 19, is set in the Hunger Games universe of Panem. It’s basically Coriolanus Snow’s backstory, following him from the age of 18 when he beats his family’s bad fortune by becoming a mentor for the Tenth Hunger Games. Only problem is, he ends up being assigned to a girl who’s playing for the extremely poor District 12. Something tells me things are going to get interesting quickly.
  2. Unsurprisingly, Lionsgate jumped on a chance to turn the sequel into a movie. Lionsgate was behind the movie versions of all three Hunger Games novels, so it makes sense that they’d want to stay on board for the prequel as well. As Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake said in a statement, “Suzanne’s new book has been worth the wait. It offers everything fans could hope for and expect from The Hunger Games while also breaking new ground and introducing an entirely new canvas of characters. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is creatively thrilling and takes this world to complex new dimensions that open up amazing cinematic possibilities. We’re thrilled to reunite this filmmaking team with this very unique franchise, and we can’t wait to begin production.”
  3. Obviously, no word on when production will start. Given that Hollywood is pretty much at a standstill, we probably shouldn’t count on this getting started anytime soon. However, after the current global health crisis is under control, I’m sure Collins and Lionsgate will get started on casting the movie and gearing up for what’s sure to be another great project.
  4. In the meantime, you can always go back and rewatch the other Hunger Games movies. There’s never a bad time to do that, after all. They’re so good!
