I was sitting on a beach in Costa Rica—actual beach, actual vacation, no work email open—when I noticed my shoulders were up near my ears.
Not because anything was wrong. There was nothing wrong.
The ocean was doing its thing, the sun was warm, my drink was cold, and I was braced for something I couldn’t name, and that wasn’t coming.
I tried the obvious things. Took a breath. Told myself to relax. Noticed that telling yourself to relax while your nervous system is running a threat assessment does approximately nothing.
I put the drink down, picked it back up, shifted in the chair, and understood—for possibly the first time clearly—that I did not know how to do this. Not that day specifically. As a general matter.
What I’ve come to understand is that the inability to relax isn’t a personality flaw or a sign that you need a better vacation.
It’s a sign that your nervous system has learned, through enough repetition and enough reason, to stay on. The alertness becomes automatic. The scanning becomes baseline. At some point, it stops feeling like vigilance and starts feeling like just how you are.
If you can’t relax even on vacation, it’s not just stress—these responses are how your brain has quietly learned to stay on 24/7 alert.
1. You scan for problems even when nothing is wrong
The restaurant is fine. The hotel room is fine. The situation is objectively, verifiably fine.
And still, some part of your attention is running a quiet inventory—who’s near the door, whether that conversation across the room sounds tense, what could go sideways, and how quickly you’d know.
The scanning isn’t chosen. It’s automatic, and it runs whether or not there’s anything to find.
This is what a nervous system looks like when it’s learned that situations can change without warning. The scanning formed for good reason and hasn’t received a clear signal to stand down, which means it applies everywhere, including the beach chair and the restaurant that is, in fact, fine.
I’ve sat through entire meals with people I love, in places I chose specifically because I wanted to be there, and spent the whole time with part of my attention pointed at the door.
2. You read neutral expressions as slightly off
The person across the table has a resting face—not unfriendly, just neutral. And still, something reads it as potentially cool, potentially irritated. The read isn’t deliberate. It arrives before you’ve decided to interpret anything, a split-second negative lean that has to be corrected once you consciously register what happened.
People who study chronic stress and perception have found that when the brain is oriented toward threat, a neutral face doesn’t stay neutral for long—it gets logged as potentially unfriendly until proven otherwise. The read happens below the level of conscious thought.
3. You automatically look for exits and where everyone is in a room
The seat at the restaurant is chosen for sightlines, not comfort.
Walking into a new space, there’s a quick read—who’s there, where the exits are, and whether anything feels off.
It happens fast enough that most people don’t realize they’re doing it. The information arrives already processed, as ambient awareness that’s always running.
People who study hypervigilance have found that once the habit of reading a room gets built—because it needs to be—it doesn’t turn off when the environment changes. The brain learned to map rooms for good reason. It just keeps doing it everywhere, including the ones where nothing is actually at stake.
4. Your brain stays partly “on” even when you’re asleep
The sound from the hallway at 2 am. The car that slows down outside. Any of these can pull you out of sleep before you’ve registered what you heard, which means the nervous system was awake before you were, monitoring and assessing before the thinking mind came online.
Usually, there’s nothing. The monitoring happens regardless.
Sleep requires a degree of surrender that a chronically alert nervous system resists. Some part stays on duty even when the rest of you is technically asleep, which is why the sleep is lighter and the rest less restorative than it should be given how long you were technically unconscious.
5. Your body holds tension you never consciously put there
The jaw is set. The shoulders are slightly raised. The stomach is doing something quiet and chronic that isn’t quite tension but isn’t relaxed either.
You don’t notice it until someone mentions it, or until you do a body scan and discover your hands have been in fists.
A nervous system running on alert keeps the body in a state of low-level readiness. The muscles stay slightly engaged. The whole physical apparatus stays oriented toward a response that may be required, which means it doesn’t fully release even when there’s nothing to respond to.
6. You can’t fully enjoy good things without waiting for them to stop
The vacation is beautiful. The evening is genuinely lovely. And alongside it—underneath it—there’s a quiet awareness that it’s going to end, that something could interrupt it, that relaxing fully would leave you unprepared for whatever comes next.
You’re never quite fully inside the experience.
This is one of the more painful expressions of chronic alertness—the inability to occupy joy completely. Not because the joy isn’t real, but because the nervous system won’t commit to a state that doesn’t include some monitoring of what might require attention next.
7. Your body responds before your mind has caught up
The loud noise happens, and you’re already braced before you’ve processed what it was.
The sudden movement in your peripheral vision, and your heart has already accelerated.
The conversation takes a turn, and your stomach tightens before you’ve registered that the tone shifted. The body is always a few beats ahead.
People who study how chronic stress changes the body have found that when the alarm has been going off regularly for a long time, it starts going off more easily—because the system learned that speed mattered, and it kept that setting.
The hair trigger isn’t an overreaction. It’s an adaptation that outlasted the conditions that produced it.
8. You check things you already know you checked
The door is locked. You know because you locked it thirty seconds ago and heard it click. And then you check again, because the knowing doesn’t quite satisfy the part of you that needs to verify.
This extends to emails sent, stove burners, and alarms. The checking provides a brief moment of certainty that the alertness immediately begins to erode.
Repeated checking is one of the behavioral expressions of a nervous system that can’t settle into certainty, because certainty requires trusting that things are fine, and a chronically alert system doesn’t fully trust that. So it checks again. The relief lasts only until the next moment of doubt.
9. You can’t sit still without it feeling like something’s wrong
The task is done.
There’s nothing that needs doing.
The appropriate response to this moment is to simply be in it.
And instead, there’s a pull toward the phone, toward something that needs organizing, toward any activity that provides the sensation of productive engagement. Rest, in the absence of earned exhaustion, doesn’t feel like rest. It feels like waiting.
People who study rest have found that when someone has been in high-alert mode for a long time, doing nothing stops feeling like a break and starts feeling like a gap—like something’s been left unmonitored. The restlessness isn’t boredom. It’s the alert state expressing itself in the absence of anything else to point at.
10. You do it so automatically, it just feels like who you are
At some point, the vigilance stopped feeling like something happening to you and started feeling like something you are.
The scanning is just how you pay attention. The tension is just how you carry yourself. The light sleeping is just how you sleep. You’ve stopped experiencing these as responses to anything and started experiencing them as baseline, which is, in a specific way, how effective an adaptation can be when it’s been running long enough. It becomes you.
