Italian Man Reportedly Breaks Government-Mandated Lockdown To Play Pokemon Go

Italians have been under a government-mandated lockdown since March 9 as the country tries to stem the spread of illness and the extremely high death count it’s resulting in, leaving residents stuck at home other than for essential trips to get groceries or seek medical help. However, that reportedly didn’t stop a 31-year-old man in San Fermo in the Como region from heading out to play Pokemon Go with his daughter.

  1. First of all, who plays Pokemon Go anymore? Sure, it was all the rage when the game was first released back in 2016, but I feel like most people have kind of move on since then. Either this guy is a little behind the times or he was full of crap.
  2. I seriously hope this is a joke. The original report of the lockdown-touting Italian appeared in the country’s Leggo newspaper, though the man wasn’t named and the details do seem somewhat vague. Because of that, it’s possible that this didn’t actually happen and the carabinieri were exaggerating a bit. However, given how selfish and stupid people are, this sadly seems true.
  3. The man didn’t think anything was wrong with his behavior. The man was confronted by police as to why he was ignoring quarantine rules and wandering the streets, to which he allegedly replied, “I have to hunt the Pokemon.”
  4. He was reportedly charged. According to the original report, the police did end up charging the man for violating the Italian lockdown rules, though it’s unclear what the charges were and what the results of the run-in were.
  5. So many people are ignoring the rules. According to Newsweek, more than 43,000 people have been sanctioned for similar offenses in Italy. The Interior Ministry reports that between March 11 and 17, more than a million people were checked for being outside when they probably shouldn’t have been.
