Jennifer Grey Says Ex Johnny Depp Was ‘Extremely Jealous’ During Their Relationship

Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey has revealed that Johnny Depp was “extremely jealous” during their relationship in the late 1980s. Grey was set up on a blind date with Depp in 1989 when he was 29 and she was 29 and they got engaged only two weeks later. While their relationship ended before they made it down the aisle, Grey is now spilling the details in her new autobiography, Out of the Corner.

  1. Grey and Depp clicked right away. As she recalled in an excerpt obtained by the Independent: “We ate, talked, drank Jack Daniel’s, laughed our asses off, took cigarette breaks midcourse. He was so ridiculously beautiful. And surprisingly open, funny, quirky and sweet.” So close were they that they even got a puppy together, which they named Lulu. “She was our practice baby and someone to keep me company when Johnny was out of town,” the 62-year-old recalled.
  2. It wasn’t long before things between the pair began to sour. Grey said Depp soon began behaving erratically, though she wrote off his problematic behavior at the time. “Johnny was commuting every week back and forth from Vancouver, but had begun more and more regularly to be getting into trouble: fights in bars, skirmishes with cops,” she wrote. “He’d started missing his flights home to LA having overslept or, when he did come home, he’d be jealous and paranoid about what I’d been up to while he was gone. I attributed his ill temper and unhappiness to him feeling miserable and powerless to get off [the TV series] 21 Jump Street.”
  3. Their relationship was incredibly fiery, with Grey insisting “there was some heat” between them. “It was a f*****g bonfire. It was literally like, ‘Are you f*****g kidding me? Are you f–king kidding me? I’ve never seen a guy like this,'” she said. “And energetically, what it was like being with him, it was like, ‘Oh, I’m being totally, totally compensated for the s**t I just went through.'”
  4. So why does this matter now? Grey’s story is all the more newsworthy given Depp is currently suing ex-wife Amber Heard for $50 million in a defamation lawsuit over an op-ed Heard wrote in 2018 claiming that Depp had abused her. During the trial, Depp’s attorneys have attempted to paint him as a kind-hearted, gentle man who’s incapable of causing physical harm to Heard or anyone else. However, Grey’s story paints a somewhat different picture.
