JK Rowling Says She Would ‘Happily Go To Jail’ For Her Transphobic Views

We truly can’t have anything nice. The world absolutely adored Harry Potter and the entire wizarding world created by JK Rowling, but then she had to go and reveal herself to be a TERF who’s made transphobia the hill she’s willing to die on and it’s kinda ruined everything. In fact, she’s so serious about her opinion on trans people that she’s said she’s literally willing to go to prison over it. What a lovely lady.

  1. Why is JK Rowling so transphobic? Her whole argument posits that trans women are erasing cis women’s experiences in life and that they’re invading AFAB (that’s “assigned female at birth”) spaces. That’s transphobic because trans women ARE women — they’re not men playing dress-up for the sake of… goodness knows what.
  2. Why doesn’t she think trans women are women? In Rowling’s head, you’re only a woman if you’re a) capable of getting pregnant and b) have had a period. Of course, there are AFAB women who are incapable of conceiving, and I’m pretty sure they’re still women. Also, plenty of biological women don’t have periods for various reasons, so her explanation is not only factually incorrect, it’s also incredibly bigoted. Add to that the fact that Rowling apparently thinks that trans and nonbinary people are just “confused” about their gender, and you’ve got a transphobic hell that I’d like to escape from immediately.
  3. Not even death threats will make JK Rowling reconsider her views. In fact, the more people have spoken against her, the more she’s stood her ground to the point that she’s invited authorities to lock her up over it.
  4. After retweeting a transphobic message on Twitter, one of her followers commented. Reposting an image that says “Trans women are women,” Rowling simply replied, “No.” That’s when one of her followers commented, “Vote Labour, get a two year stretch.” The comment referred to the UK political party’s proposal to make it a hate crime to purposely misgender someone. “I’ll happily do two years if the alternative is compelled speech and forced denial of the reality and importance of sex,” she responded. “Bring on the court case, I say. It’ll be more fun than I’ve ever had on a red carpet.”
  5. She does actually have plenty of supporters. JK Rowling is not the only transphobic person out there. She has plenty of followers who appreciate her stance. “You are a brave and honorable lady,” one person said. Another joked that “JK would absolutely be running that joint” if she went to prison. Sigh.
