Police in Markham, Illinois have launched an investigation after the family of a man visiting from Kentucky was found to have brought a suitcase containing a woman’s dismembered body parts with him on the 400-mile journey. According to CBS News, the man brought the gruesome contents with him on a Greyhound bus and his family only made the discovery when he left their residence to visit a local library.
- The man’s family is cooperating with authorities. The family members stayed with police in Markham late into the night on Tuesday, September 14 answering questions and trying to help in any way they could. They told authorities that while they suspected something was a bit weird with the suitcase, they never would have expected what was found within.
- The man brought “luggage – two, three bags” with him. The man, who is said to be the son of the homeowner, boarded a Greyhound in Louisville, Kentucky and brought the body parts with him on the five-hour journey to Markham, according to authorities. According to Markam Police Chief Terry White, there were “early reports of foul odor coming from the bags” on behalf of the family.
- The family got extra suspicious when the man never unpacked. Despite having been at the house for several days, the man never unpacked his bags and he kept a very watchful eye over them at all times to ensure no one went near them. They didn’t get to find out what was in them until the man finally left to visit a local library and left the suitcases behind. “A human body part was discovered. They immediately backed away and called police,” White said.
- The suitcases contained the body parts of one woman. Police believe it may have something to do with a woman who went missing in Louisville, Kentucky last week but investigations are still ongoing. The man who had the suitcases is currently in police custody, but he hasn’t yet been charged with a crime.
