A Kentucky town has named a French bulldog named Wilbur as its new mayor. Rabbit Hash, a small town that’s actually an unincorporated community that lies on the Ohio River, put Wilbur Beast in office on Tuesday, according to a Facebook post made by the town’s historical society on Tuesday, November 3.
- Wilbur had the highest votes ever! While Rabbit Hash has had an animal mayor since the 1990s, Wilbur has been perhaps the most popular winner ever, receiving more votes than any candidate that’s ever come before him. “Mayoral election in Rabbit Hash has been called! Wilbur Beast is the new mayor with an amazing 13,143 votes (highest winning total ever) toward an election total of 22,985!!! (Also the highest total ever for a Rabbit Hash election),” the historical society wrote in the post. He’ll be taking over from the current pit bull in charge, Mayor Brynneth Pawltro, who has served since 2017, WLWT reports.
- He had some tough competition. Wilbur was up against a beagle named Jack Rabbit and a golden retriever named Poppy for the role of mayor, and he beat them both by a margin of more than 10,000 votes. That’s pretty impressive!
- The runners-up will still get to be involved. Jack Rabbit and Poppy haven’t been entirely pushed out. The historical society announced that the other dogs will still serve as Rabbit Hash Ambassadors, which I’m sure is a relief to many.
- The election serves as a fundraiser for the historical society. Each “vote” costs $1, with this year’s election bringing in a hopping $13,156. Wilbur himself earned $6,165 of that money, which is no small feat. Now we just have to hope for a peaceful transfer of power.
