Key Character Traits of People Who Live Adventurous Lives

People can be divided into two categories: adventurous and more cautious. If you’re the former, you have likely been told that you should be more logical and that life isn’t one big vacation or party. While everyone has positive and negative character traits, you likely have these 15 personality traits if you love adventure.

1. You’re brave (and push through fear when you feel it).

If you want to live a life that is out of the ordinary, you need to have courage. This is the only way you can take risks, whether planning a solo trip or trying to make your daily routine more interesting and less, well, routine. This doesn’t mean you don’t get scared sometimes, but you’ve learned to ignore your fears and act anyway.

2. You say yes to opportunities and invitations.

Adventurous people say yes rather than no since this is the only way to change your life. Maybe you were never a fan of sports and when your co-worker invited you to join their pickleball team, you jumped at the chance and are now a pro. No matter what invitations you get, you tend to say yes because you never know where they could lead.

3. You’re persuasive.

Being adventurous also means you inspire the people you love to take risks, have more fun, and add some excitement to their lives. Maybe you convinced your mom who isn’t one for international travel to go to Italy this summer. Or maybe your partner is now joining you on Sunday morning runs because you made it look so enjoyable. While others might lovingly complain that you get them out of their comfort zones, they secretly appreciate it.

4. You make quick decisions and think on your feet.

Did you hear about a cool new position that sounds better than your current job that’s stressing you out? Do you want to move to a new city for a year and see how it goes? While these are big life decisions that others might hesitate to agree to, you would rather act now and think later. This doesn’t mean you don’t think rationally or carefully about your life choices. You just know that things tend to work out and you would rather live in the here and now than worry too much.

5. You’re curious about anything and everything.

From a friend of a friend that you meet at a party to that fantasy book series you just started diving into, you’re curious about the world around you. You know that being interested in other people, places, and things infuses your daily life with a sense of adventure, even if you aren’t traveling anywhere right now.

6. You’re optimistic.

Being pessimistic and adventurous don’t mix. You’re a cheerful, optimistic person who thinks the future will be better than the present and the past. Instead of being anxious about all the things that could go wrong, you believe it will all be fine, and that belief carries you through.

7. You splurge when it matters.

Whether you’re a saver or a spender, you don’t believe that money needs to sit in your bank account forever when you could use it for something fun and thrilling. Being adventurous means you make a big purchase every once in a while, from finally replacing your saggy couch to going on the trip you always dreamed of. You’re still careful and thoughtful about your money, but you feel fine splurging at times.

8. You’re flexible.

If you live for adventure, you know how to adapt. You’re used to flights getting rescheduled and are more comfortable with change than most people. You’ve learned to stay flexible because if you’re too organized or set in your ways, you know that you might miss meeting that new person who could change your life or that great new restaurant you found by exploring your city.

9. You have a growth mindset.

Being adventurous means you want to grow as a person and become better as you know that will help you leave your comfort zone. When you have a growth mindset, you don’t feel bad when you mess up or when things go wrong. Instead of having a fixed mindset, you think positively and believe that if you work hard, you will get what you want from life and work.

10. You’re resourceful.

You’re a problem solver who does well in chaotic environments because organization, schedules, and plans bore you. Chances are that other people are envious of your resourceful nature. While some might criticize your desire for adventure since they might say that you aren’t practical, it’s great to be able to figure out issues on the fly.

11. You’re a hard worker.

Although there are some negative character traits associated with having a sense of adventure (like people thinking you’re too rash and impulsive), you’re likely someone who works hard. Since you believe life is an exciting journey, you’re an ambitious person with a great work ethic. You don’t want to miss out on promotions or cool opportunities, and you’re always ready for what comes next.

12. You’re outgoing.

Do you think that every day has the potential to be fun and thrilling? When you love leaving your comfort zone behind, you become a confident and outgoing person. You don’t second guess your decisions and you’re not shy about chatting with new people. It’s great to be secure with who you are and your friends and family likely wish they were more like you.

13. You like being in control.

When you’re adventurous, you don’t want other people to be the boss of you. Why should someone tell you how to live your life? Of course, this can make it tricky to stay at a job for a long time, which is why you might look for new positions more frequently than someone who’s less brave. You want to be in charge so you can make sure you’re taking enough risks.

14. You’re self-centered (in a positive way).

While of course being selfish can be terrible (and no one wants to be labeled as that), prioritizing yourself can actually be a good thing. Since you know that you need adventure and fun in order to be happy, you look out for number one and make sure you’re living a life you’re proud of.

15. You welcome change.

The old cliche is true: change is the one thing in life you know will occur. While some are afraid of change because they cling to routines, scared of starting a new job or moving away, you’re invigorated by fresh challenges. When you love adventure, you love not knowing what’s going to happen and think that life is more fun this way.
