Lori Vallow Daybell, the Arizona “Doomsday mom” accused of killing two of her children because she believed they were possessed by demons, has been found guilty of their murders. The eight-week trial revealed gruesome details about the deaths of 11-year-old JJ and 16-year-old Tylee whose remains were discovered buried in shallow graves on the property of Lori’s new husband, Chad Daybell. It took the 12-member jury of seven men and five women just under seven hours to convict Lori Vallow on all counts against her

JJ and Tylee were last seen in September 2019, and Vallow not only failed to report the children missing but actively impeded authorities’ investigation into their whereabouts. Instead, she was too busy getting married to Chad Daybed just a week after his own wife of 30+ years, Tammy, suddenly died. Lori’s failure to produce the children as well as her lies to police about what happened to them led her to be arrested in February 2020.

JJ and Tylee’s bodies were found in June 2020, with JJ’s pajamas “soaked with decomposition” while “his ankles were bound with duct tape” and “he still had on his pull-up nighttime diaper.” As for Tylee, she had been dismembered and partially burned, leaving her body in such bad shape that it was very difficult to determine how she actually died.

Lori Vallow had no reaction as the guilty verdict was read

Throughout the trial, Lori Vallow seemed at times to be visibly amused. At one point, she wanted to leave the courtroom so that she wouldn’t have to hear the horrific details of what happened to her children. However, Idaho District Court Judge Steven Boyce refused that request and forced her to remain in the courtroom. Vallow offered no defense in the case, instead having her legal team simply claiming that the prosecution hadn’t proven her guilt. The jury clearly disagreed.

In a verdict read out in the Ada County Courthouse on Friday, May 12, Lori Vallow was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder of JJ and Tylee as well as three counts of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder for JJ and Tylee as well as for Chad Daybell’s wife, Tammy. As the verdict was read, her face remained impassive and gave no visible reaction.

Now that Vallow has been convicted, she will face life in prison without the chance of parole. However, sentencing will take place at a later date.
